City of Havelock Summer Camp Counselor (Part-time) in Havelock, North Carolina
Primary Reason Why Classification Exists This part-time position is responsible for supervising children enrolled in the Summer Youth Program. Counselors are expected to lead a variety of structured activities and safely chaperone participants during scheduled field trips.

Illustrative Examples of Work
- Provide daily supervision and guidance to campers ages 6-10
- Lead and actively participate in a variety of camp activities
- Collaborate with fellow counselors to support program operations
- Ensure the safety, well-being, and appropriate behavior of all campers at all times
- Instruct and develop campers skills in various sports and recreational activities
- Supervise campers at aquatic facilities and during off-site field trips
- Assist in planning and organizing daily schedules and activities
- Facilitate group games, creative projects, and arts-based activities
- Maintain accurate attendance records and manage camper permission documentation
- Address and resolve parental questions, concerns, and complaints in the absence of a supervisor
- Perform additional duties assigned to support overall camp operations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates knowledge of recreational activities and best practices in promoting positive behavior while serving as an appropriate role model for campers
- Proven ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining professional, courteous relationships with campers, parents, colleagues, community partners, and the public
- Ability to understand and adhere to the policies and procedures of the City of Havelock Parks and Recreation Department
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise participants and exercise sound judgment in a variety of situations
- Capable of understanding and following both oral and written instructions effectively
Education and Experience Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by May 30, 2026. Prior experience in a summer camp setting is preferred. Experience working with children or adolescentswhether through paid positions or volunteer roles in settings such as schools, camps, daycare centers, or recreational programsis highly desirable. Coursework or a degree in Education, Recreation, or a related field is also preferred.
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Drivers License with SandP endorsements
- Certified with Craven County Schools to drive a bus
- Certified in first aid, CPR, and AED

Physical Requirements This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and convey accurate, detailed, or important instructions to others loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive and comprehend information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
Working Conditions The employee in this class is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The predominant amount of time would be spent indoors in rooms, gymnasiums, or other facilities with leisure service participants.
