About The Role
Under the supervision of the Car Equipment Division Supervisor or Foreman, the incumbent performs skilled work that includes but is not limited to the operation and repair of machine tools; layout work; and the installation, removal, assembly, disassembly, testing, servicing and repair of rail car and associated equipment.
Responsibilities:
Typical duties may include but are not necessarily limited to:
Sets up and operates shop machines such as lathes,grinders, milling machines, wheel lathes, wheelpresses and boring machines, to include thetooling, cutting speeds and feed of same.
Performs bench work using shop machines andprecision, hand and pneumatic tools to overhaulrail car associated equipment (e.g., airconditioner units, air compressor units), and tofabricate metal parts when necessary (e.g., screws,nuts, bolts).
Performs layout workfrom blueprints and/or sketches
Using shop machines and precision, hand andpneumatic tools weighing 25 lbs, installs, removes,assembles, disassembles, tests, services andrepairs rail car and associated equipment (i.e.,truck units, trac pacs, air conditionercompressors, air conditioner units).
All tasks may be performed with or without drawings. Work is performed in accordance with established servicing programs and maintenance procedures, and is in conformance with FRA, OSHA, PA & PATH regulations but does require the use of independent judgment periodically.
NOTE: Machinist Car Equipment works 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts, days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays, and during inclement weather and emergencies. The Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
Four (4) years paid full-time work experience as a journeyman in the Machinist trade -OR- completion of a registered Car Equipment Machinist Apprentice Program.
Possess knowledge of CNC machine operations, reading and interpreting blueprints; utilization and operation of a crane; fabrication of metal parts; disassembly and reassembly of complex machinery and its components; using tools and equipment associated with machinery such as lathes, precision grinders, presses, mills, boring machines, precision meters, micrometers, and depth gauges.

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
- Ability to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnight, weekends and holidays).
Selection Process
Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process which consists of a practical examination.
Practical Test: The performance test will consist of a series of practical problems designed to assess key competencies related to the performance of the Machinist position such as:
Lathe Use
Marking, Drilling, and Tapping
Precision Measurement.

The starting salary for Machinist is $47.67/hourly. Machinists are eligible for step increases (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
