Job Duties:

Under the direct supervision of a master mechanic, workers will perform various duties all associated with diagnosing, adjusting, repairing and overhauling diesel farm machinery and gas vehicles such as tractors, trucks, farm implements, etc. Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

-Maintain, repair, and overhaul farm machinery and vehicles, such as tractors, forklifts, trailers, any and all equipment used during the planting, production, and harvest of crops.

-Record details of repairs made and parts used.

-Reassemble machines and equipment following repair, testing operation, and adjusting, as necessary.

-Examine and listen to equipment, read inspection reports as to problems determine to be repaired.

-Maintain -repair maintenance records.

-Inspect mechanical equipment to locate damage, defects, or wear.

-Test and replace electrical wiring components for proper functioning, using test meters, soldering equipment, and hand tools.

-Test mechanical equipment to ensure proper functioning.

-Tune or overhaul engines.

• Perform routine maintenance on vehicle and farm equipment such as change oil and filters, brakes, brake pads and repair tires.

-Knowledgeable and repair in hydraulic systems

-Repair or replace defective parts, using hand tools, and grinders.

-Repair worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts.

-Install machine or equipment replacement parts.

-Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair.

-Repair defective engines or engine components.

-Adjust vehicle/equipment components to ensure optimal performance, according to specifications.

-Reassemble equipment after repair.

-Clean equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order.

-Diagnosing, adjust, repair all small engine equipment such as mowers, trimmers and power washers.

Replace components, such as carburetors, fuel pumps, generators, ignition points and spark plugs. reassemble, adjust and equipment to ensure efficient operation. May install and repair wiring and motors to maintain farm electrical system. May assist other workers in more complex maintenance tasks, such as overhaul of machinery and equipment.

GENERAL CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO ALL CROPS: Fieldwork begins at assigned time shortly after daylight. Work is performed during a wide variety of weather and in temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to 95+ degrees F. Workers will work on their feet in bent position for long periods of time. Workers must be able to bend, stoop, and stand on feet for long periods of time. Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order. Must be able to work in hot humid weather for extended periods of time. Employer will provide all safety and special equipment when needed. Employer will provide tools and equipment at no cost to workers to perform the above task. Workers will supply their own work clothes to insure their comfort during the performance of the job. Workers will be charged for any willful damage or loss or failure to return such tools and equipment. All tasks in this Job Description constitute one (1) job; This is a very demanding and competitive business in which quality specifications must be rigorously adhered to.

Full Crop Commitment: This is regular work, seven hours per day, Monday-Friday, and five hours on Saturday for the full remainder of the period of employment. The worker agrees to work for assigned employer(s) whenever work is available during the full remaining period of employment even though work may be slack at times. The worker understands that if the worker quits or is terminated for cause prior to the end of the period of employment, the worker will not receive the 3/4 guarantees and will not receive certain transportation reimbursements. Excessive tardiness and/or absences will not be tolerated and will result in termination.

Daily individual work assignments, crew assignments, and location of work, will be made by and at the sole discretion of the farm manger and/or farm supervisor as the needs of the farming operation dictate. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and/or different tasks on different days. Workers will be expected to perform any of the listed duties and work on any crop as assigned by the worker's supervisor.

Anticipated Hours of Work: Worker will report to work at the designated time and place as directed by the Grower each day. The standard workweek: is Monday & Friday 8 hours, Tuesday-Thursday 9 hours and 2 hours on Saturday is normal; however, workers may be requested to work 12+ hours per day depending upon the conditions in the fields and maturity of the crops but will not be required to do so. Also, the workers may be requested to work on federal holidays and on their Sabbath but will not be required to do so. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available.

Down Time: Workers should expect occasional periods of little or no work because of weather, crop or other conditions beyond the employer’s control. These periods can occur anytime throughout the season. Starting and ending times may vary according to weather and crop conditions. When this occurs, the employer will give workers advance notice as possible. Starting and ending times will change due to weather and crop conditions. During certain times of the season workers are required to work at night. Workers will be given as much notice as possible when changing shifts are required. Also, the workers may be requested to work on federal holidays and on their Sabbath but will not be required to do so. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available. If a worker is offered and agrees to work more than the scheduled hours during the workweek, they must still report to work on their other scheduled days, unless arrangements are approved in advance with the owner or supervisor. Choosing to work longer hours during the week does not exclude you from working each scheduled workday. Not reporting for work on your scheduled workday will be counted as an unexcused absence.

Work specifications, in particular, can change from time to time during the season due various conditions, even on the same crop. Workers will be expected to conform to the specific instructions given for each day’s work.

The farm owner/supervisor or a designated employee will provide specific instructions and close supervision. Workers will be expected to perform their duties in a timely and proficient manner and will have close supervision to insure adherence to instruction. Work will be closely monitored and reviewed for quality.

Minimum Education Required

None. No High School Diploma or GED required.

Minimum Experience Required

All applicants must have at least 2 months experience operating 50+HP sod harvester and other manual transmission equipment.

Must be able to lift at least 60 lbs.

Applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Applicants must be able to furnish affirmative job references from recent employers.

Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order.

Must be able to work in the hot humid weather for extended periods of time (Work is performed during a wide variety of weather and in temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to 95+ degrees F.)

Additional Compensation

Employer reserves the right to pay higher than the stated wage rate to any worker foreign or domestic. This is not promised or guaranteed. The decision to pay above the stated rates will be made by the employer, at their sole discretion, and will be based on factors including the recipients’ performance and tenure including working team leaders, and drivers.

As required for all workers in Minnesota, hours worked in excess of 48 hours in a work week will be paid at the rate of 1.5 times the regular rate of pay.

EMPLOYER ASSURANCES: Work guaranteed for 3/4 of contract period, starting with date of arrival at work site. Employer provides free housing for workers whose residence is beyond normal commuting distance. Employer pays inbound transportation and subsistence to work site upon 50% completion of work contract for workers whose residence is beyond normal commuting distance. Daily subsistence will be provided at a rate of at least $16.28 per day during travel to a maximum of $68.00 per day with receipts (Updated 03/24/2025). Required work-related tools and supplies provided free of charge by employer.

Effective Jan 1, 2024, per MN State Statute, an employee will earn one hour of paid sick and safe time for every 30 hours worked, up to at least 48 hours of accrued Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) per year, provided the employee works a minimum of 80 hours in a calendar year.
