Job Title: Maintenance Planner

Job Description

The Maintenance Planner coordinates, schedules, and optimizes maintenance activities in a heavy industrial environment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of equipment and facilities. This role develops and manages preventive and predictive maintenance plans, prepares detailed job packages, and collaborates closely with maintenance and production teams to minimize downtime and support continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Review, approve, prioritize, schedule, and close corrective work orders in the maintenance system.

  • Develop new preventive and predictive maintenance tasks and modify existing tasks to improve equipment reliability.

  • Review the weekly maintenance backlog for assigned areas and lead discussions on required work with stakeholders.

  • Meet regularly with mechanical and production teams to plan upcoming maintenance jobs and coordinate schedules.

  • Build weekly, down-day, and outage schedules using Microsoft applications to align maintenance work with production needs.

  • Plan maintenance work by identifying required materials, spare parts, rental equipment, and contractor support.

  • Create detailed job plans and preventive maintenance plans that clearly define labor requirements, tools, and materials.

  • Develop and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) for equipment to support efficient planning and parts management.

  • Create or revise Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMPs) and validate them in the field to ensure accuracy and practicality.

  • Perform parts verification for received materials to confirm correctness and readiness for planned work.

  • Ensure all job parts are kitted and staged so that maintenance work can start on time and proceed efficiently.

  • Notify contractors of required safety training and site expectations before their arrival on site.

  • Review technician notes, labor entries, and parts usage prior to closing work orders to ensure accurate documentation.

  • Participate in and, when needed, lead improvement initiatives and continuous improvement projects related to maintenance processes.

  • Operate forklifts or other mobile equipment when required to support maintenance activities.

  • Adhere to all plant safety and environmental guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Perform physical tasks as needed, including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing stairs and ladders, walking, standing, stooping, and reaching during the course of work.

Essential Skills

  • At least five years of experience as a maintenance planner in a manufacturing environment.

  • 5 years of leadership experience in maintenance planning.

  • 3+ years of experience in an industrial, military, or manufacturing environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge of maintenance practices and equipment in a heavy industrial setting.

  • Hands-on experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), including scheduling preventive maintenance and managing work orders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for scheduling, data analysis, and reporting.

  • Experience using Microsoft Word for creating and updating maintenance procedures and documentation.

  • Ability to troubleshoot maintenance planning and scheduling issues to improve efficiency and reliability.

  • Solid understanding of basic safety regulations and procedures in an industrial environment.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple work orders, priorities, and deadlines.

  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret maintenance data and drive improvements.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build collaborative relationships with maintenance, production, and contractors.

  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing stairs and ladders, walking, standing, stooping, and reaching.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.

  • Experience planning and scheduling preventive and predictive maintenance activities.

  • Experience developing and updating Bills of Materials (BOMs) for equipment.

  • Experience creating and revising Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMPs).

  • Familiarity with improvement initiatives and continuous improvement methodologies in maintenance environments.

  • Comfort operating forklifts or other mobile equipment when required.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in written and verbal form with technicians, engineers, and production personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead or influence maintenance teams without direct authority.

Work Environment

This role is based in a heavy industrial environment that can be dark, loud, and subject to a wide range of temperatures throughout the year. The work involves regular presence on the plant floor, including climbing stairs and ladders, walking, standing for extended periods, and performing occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. You will use Microsoft Word and Excel, along with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), as core planning tools. The position operates on a day shift schedule, typically from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times, and adherence to safety and environmental guidelines is an integral part of daily work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Hammond, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $85000.00 - $95000.00/yr.
