Mechanical Installer – Painter

Core Purpose

Under general supervision, the Mechanical Installer – Painter performs paint repairs based on project needs and supports mechanical equipment installation on light and heavy rail vehicles when required. Work must follow trade standards, supervisory direction, and company procedures. The role requires frequent lifting, climbing, standing, crouching, bending, and kneeling, and may include weekend or holiday work.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities – Paint Repair

Safety & Compliance

  • Perform paint repairs following Client safety protocols (SWMS, SOP) and OSHA regulations.

  • Identify and report safety hazards, near misses, and incidents.

  • Use required PPE and maintain paint spray booth, tools, and hazardous materials properly.

    Quality Assurance

  • Ensure repairs meet Client paint quality standards and specifications.

  • Conduct self-quality checks and follow right-first-time practices.

  • Follow all painting process steps including surface preparation, masking, mixing ratios, and environmental controls.

  • Achieve OEM-level paint blending with color match not visible from 3 ft.

  • Partner with Quality to resolve defects and prevent recurrence.

    Delivery

  • Perform buffing, sanding, brush touch repairs, spray repairs, blending, gel coat/fiberglass, and powder coat finish repairs.

  • Complete paint repair assignments based on project priorities.

  • Repair metallic components, fiberglass parts, and rail car shells as required.

  • Transition to mechanical assembly when paint workload decreases.

    Secondary Responsibilities – Mechanical Assembly

    Safety & Compliance

  • Perform installations per Client SWMS, SOPs, OSHA standards, and PPE requirements.

  • Report hazards and safety issues promptly.

    Quality Assurance

  • Ensure installations meet Client quality standards and current drawing revisions.

  • Complete Manufacturing Inspection Plans (MIPs) accurately.

  • Support defect resolution, inspections, and buyback readiness.

  • Coordinate with Quality and escalate unresolved issues.

    Production Delivery

  • Attend daily 7:00 AM production meetings and follow assigned work plans.

  • Perform mechanical assemblies per engineering drawings and SOPs.

  • Meet efficiency targets and minimize defects.

  • Escalate schedule blockers and provide daily progress updates.

  • Support training of new employees on installation procedures.

    Required Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years hands-on paint repair experience, including spray gun application, surface prep (sanding, priming, masking), and OEM-quality paint blending.

  • Experience with buffing, sanding, touch-ups, spray repairs, gel coat/fiberglass, and powder coat finishes.

  • Basic mechanical assembly skills, including reading engineering drawings and performing installations to specification.

  • Experience working in safety-regulated environments (OSHA, SOPs, SWMS, PPE).
