Job Title: Industrial Mechanic

Job Description

This role focuses on maintaining, installing, and optimizing production equipment at a peat moss harvesting and processing facility. You will work with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical automation systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. The position combines hands-on troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and minor repair work across multiple trades, including mechanical, electrical, and welding.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the fabrication, installation, and adjustment of production equipment to support safe and efficient operations.

  • Perform maintenance activities in accordance with the preventive maintenance program to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.

  • Identify required repairs through inspections and troubleshooting, and either resolve them directly or escalate when needed.

  • Notify your immediate supervisor of any potential issues, hazards, or repairs that you cannot resolve on your own to ensure safety and continuity of operations.

  • Assist in the installation of new equipment and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment, performance, and reliability.

  • Adjust, replace, and clean parts or equipment as needed to maintain optimal operating conditions.

  • Perform minor welding, electrical, or carpentry repairs to support ongoing maintenance and equipment reliability.

  • Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, plans, and schematics to install and service mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot pneumatic and hydraulic systems used in production operations.

  • Support electromechanical automation systems by performing basic troubleshooting, adjustments, and repairs.

  • Contribute to both preventive and corrective maintenance activities to address equipment issues proactively and reactively.

  • Follow all safety procedures and best practices while working on equipment and within the facility.

Essential Skills

  • Registered 3rd-year or higher apprentice, journeyperson, or Red Seal Industrial Mechanic / Millwright qualification.

  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical automation systems in an industrial environment.

  • Proven experience working with hydraulic systems, including installation, adjustment, and repair.

  • Proven experience working with pneumatic systems, including installation, adjustment, and repair.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, plans, and schematics.

  • Experience with installation, alignment, and commissioning of industrial equipment.

  • Demonstrated skills in preventive and corrective maintenance for industrial machinery.

  • Ability to perform minor welding tasks as part of maintenance and repair work.

  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills related to industrial equipment and automation systems.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in industrial maintenance and repair.

  • Competence in troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automation-related issues.

  • Ability to work safely and follow established maintenance and safety procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Red Seal Industrial Mechanic / Millwright certification is a strong asset.

  • Experience working in an industrial maintenance environment, ideally in continuous or seasonal production operations.

  • Familiarity with schematic reading for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems.

  • Experience in industrial maintenance, including fabrication, adjustment, and repair of production equipment.

  • Experience performing minor carpentry repairs within an industrial setting.

  • Comfort working within a preventive maintenance program and documenting maintenance activities.

  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and skills development offered by the employer.

Work Environment

You will work at a combined peat moss harvesting site and processing plant where raw peat is collected from nearby bogs and refined into horticultural substrates for commercial use. The facility supports extensive production operations that run 24/7 during peak season and operate on four shifts in the summer. The role follows a rotating schedule over a two-week cycle, currently Monday to Friday days from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a planned move to rotation including night shifts from 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate after 8 hours per day. You will report directly to a production supervisor and work closely with team leaders in a hands-on industrial environment that involves working around large mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automated systems. The setting is a production and maintenance environment where appropriate work and safety attire, including safety footwear, is required, supported by allowances and reimbursement programs.

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $47.00/hr.
