This role in summary

Whirlpool is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Controls and Systems Engineer. This is an onsite role at our Greenville, OH location.

The Controls and Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of label printing and scanning systems and controls used to automate industrial machinery and processes. This role is essential for ensuring that operations run safely, efficiently, and reliably, driving continuous improvement in productivity and product quality.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Work closely with a team of engineers and technicians with responsibility for automation projects, both new installations and retrofits, that improve safety, quality, production, and reduce cost in the manufacturing plant.

  • Develop comprehensive maintenance and reliability strategy to sustain performance of automation systems as they scale

  • Utilize excellent project management, communication, and documentation skills to institutionalize critical processes and support knowledge, ensuring sustainability of improvements.

  • Design, program, test, and commission Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens).

  • Develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and network architectures using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical) in compliance with safety standards (e.g., NEC, NFPA, UL).

  • Develop and implement control strategies and algorithms, including PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) loops and motion control, to optimize system performance.

  • Oversee the installation, startup, and commissioning of new automated equipment and control systems on the plant floor.

  • Perform root cause analysis and provide rapid technical support to diagnose and resolve issues with existing control systems, minimizing production downtime.

  • Identify and execute system upgrades and modifications to improve efficiency, reduce cycle time, and enhance equipment reliability.

  • Create and maintain detailed control system documentation, including functional specifications, control narratives, electrical drawings, and operator training manuals.

  • Ensure all control systems adhere to relevant internal, industry, and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 79, ISO).

  • Manage controls-related projects, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, and vendor coordination.

  • Manage and maintain all aspects of the label printing systems and associated network infrastructure/software. This includes modification of existing labels, development of new label systems, and support for ICCA Pack integration and the line scan system.

  • Collaborate closely with the IT Operations team to ensure the continuous reliability and stability of the network environment through proactive maintenance, performance optimization, and swift, effective resolution of all connectivity and infrastructure incidents.

  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, control panel design, and panel building standards

  • Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and servo/motion control systems

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or Automation Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in controls systems engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in PLC programming (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram)

  • 5+ years of experience with HMI/SCADA development and industrial networking protocols (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus)

  • 5+ years of experience with label printing systems and associated network infrastructure/software

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems

  • Soft Skills & Other Requirements

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities for collaboration with cross-functional teams (Mechanical, Manufacturing, IT, Production)

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Willingness to provide on-call support RSRWH
