Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Senior Counsel Mexico, will function within the Commercial and International Center of Excellence within Corning’s Law Department, which is responsible for providing collaborative legal support for Corning’s business units to promote Corning’s global business interests while mitigating legal and business risk. The attorney will serve as the lead legal counsel for Corning in Mexico with responsibilities principally focused on Corning’s Optical Communications (COC) division in Mexico. Accordingly, this role will report to the Director, Law, Corning Optical Communications, although the range of responsibilities for this position will necessitate interaction with other Centers of Excellence within Corning’s Law Department (i.e., Compliance and Employment).
Key Responsibilities
Support Director, Law, Corning Optical Communications on all legal matters affecting COC operations in Mexico
Support Corning’s Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer, and Corning’s Senior Counsel and Director, Global Employment Law, on matters relevant to their CoEs in Mexico
Support the Employment Relations activities of Corning’s Global HR function in Mexico in relation to employment and labor issues including collective bargaining agreements and union relations
Perform complex or specialized legal activities to protect Corning’s legal and business interests and mitigate legal risks
Review, draft, and execute contracts, agreements, and other legal documentation across a variety of matters, including real estate, commercial, regulatory, financial, and operational issues
Identify legal implications, develop practical options, and synthesize analysis into briefs, reports, and recommendations for senior counsel and key stakeholders, including recommendations related to proposed changes in laws and regulations
Collaborate with intellectual property attorneys, regional or division counsel, and legal COEs when specialized knowledge within a particular discipline is required
Communicate cross-functionally and across divisions to promote information sharing, with attention to key developments in active legal matters
Apply judgment to escalate issues to the appropriate regional or commercial contacts within the Law Department
Coach and guide less experienced counsel and support knowledge-sharing within the Law function
Contribute to larger cross-functional projects or processes, including managing elements of projects with measurable impact
Experiences/Education - Required
Applicable Mexican bar admissions
J.D. or L.L.M. from an ABA accredited law school
7+ years combined experience as a practicing attorney at one or more top law firms, government agencies and / or in-house legal departments.
Demonstrated experience supporting a division or region across multiple areas of law, including drafting and executing legal documentation that may impact a business or region
Demonstrated success collaborating with cross-functional partners and other Law Department stakeholders across divisions, geographies, and/or COEs
Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in Mexican employment and labor law, including compliance, employee relations, and labor dispute management
Travel percentage 25%
Experiences/Education - Desired
Experience interacting with senior leadership, delivering communications/presentations, and contributing to business discussions is preferred
Experience coaching and reviewing the work of team members is preferred
Experience conducting internal investigations and handling the oversight and resolution of compliance matters is preferred
