We are currently hiring a Summer Co-Op Student – Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineer to join the team at our underground salt mine in Goderich, Ontario. This is not a fly in/fly out location.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position functions within a team of other professionals and reports directly to the Engineering and Capital Manager. To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Assist in the completion of engineering work orders, as required

  • Field inspections, data collection, documentation of existing conditions, create or modify drawings in AutoCAD.

  • Performs mechanical or structural calculations to assist, where required.

  • Prepares preliminary design and cost estimates required to analyze cost to benefit of capital expenditures and completes funding request justification accordingly.

  • Work with Operations to develop engineering solutions for production bottlenecks and problems.

  • Performs design and cost estimates on new projects. Assist with capital projects as required.

  • Troubleshoots material handling problems and identify solutions.

Administrative Assistance

  • Filing drawings digitally to the network in collaboration with engineering department personnel.

  • Prepare and complete risk assessments and management of change functions

  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Provide assistance as required to other engineering personnel (ground control, mechanical engineering, drafting, etc).

What should you bring to the role?

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program either in college or university.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate reasoning

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Has a self-starter attitude with a high level of motivation

  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas

  • Evidence of leadership skills, working effectively with a team

  • Ability to receive coaching and a desire to enhance learning

  • High level of attention to detail while providing accurate data aligned with departmental standards

What is the work schedule?

  • This is a Monday-Friday position working an 8-hour day shift.

  • Overtime may be required in order to support a 24/7 operation.

  • This position is expected to work underground.

ABOUT THE POSITION

  • Vacancy Status : This posting is for an existing vacancy.

  • Starting Base Wage: $27.13-$32.71 (based on school year education level).
