This role offers an opportunity for a degreed architect with 5+ years of experience to lead and develop project designs across all phases, from concept through construction documentation. You will create and coordinate project designs, manage building design consultants, and produce presentation and design drawings for a variety of commercial projects, including retail, industrial, multifamily, light commercial, adaptive reuse, office, educational, institutional, and medical/healthcare facilities. The position combines hands-on design work, technical documentation, and active coordination with internal teams and external partners, while providing flexibility, a collaborative culture, and clear pathways for professional growth and licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate and develop project designs and plans for all phases of one or more projects, from early concept through construction documentation.

  • Create and refine presentation drawings and design drawings that clearly communicate design intent to clients, consultants, and internal team members.

  • Coordinate the work of building design consultants, ensuring their drawings and documents align with project goals, standards, and schedules.

  • Monitor drawings and documentation throughout the design and production process to maintain quality, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.

  • Prepare detailed project scopes and fee proposals, ensuring that project numbers are assigned, contracts are executed, and consultants’ proposals are properly documented and signed.

  • Complete project design tasks and deliverables within budgeted hours and established schedules, proactively managing your time and workload.

  • Verify project status on an ongoing basis and identify any issues related to expended time versus budgeted hours, flagging potential problems early and proposing solutions.

  • Promptly address, document, and issue all change-of-service requests from staff and consultants to maintain clear communication and control over scope changes.

  • Lead and contribute to project planning, design development, and construction documentation, ensuring technical accuracy and constructability.

  • Take responsibility for specific technical design aspects of assigned projects, including investigation, evaluation, and recommendation of design solutions.

  • Produce high-quality drafting and construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD in accordance with office standards and project requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with project architects, project managers, and production-level architects as part of small project teams, typically consisting of three people.

  • Attend and actively participate in internal and external meetings to coordinate design decisions, resolve issues, and keep stakeholders informed.

  • Support the coordination of architectural work with MEP and other disciplines, particularly within a mixed architecture and MEP office environment.

  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture by engaging in regular communication, knowledge sharing, and collaborative problem solving across project types.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture.

  • At least 5 years of professional architectural experience, including work on commercial projects in retail, industrial, or multifamily sectors.

  • Strong experience in project planning, design, construction documentation, and coordination across all phases of a project.

  • Proficiency in Revit, with the ability to produce and coordinate detailed architectural models and drawings.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, including drafting and preparation of construction documents.

  • Ability to manage and coordinate building design consultants and integrate their work into cohesive project deliverables.

  • Demonstrated capability to complete design deliverables within budgeted hours and scheduled deadlines.

  • Experience preparing project scopes and fee proposals, and familiarity with basic contract and proposal processes.

  • Skill in investigating, evaluating, and recommending technical design solutions for assigned project components.

  • Strong drafting skills and attention to detail in all design and documentation work.

  • Effective communication skills for coordinating internally with project teams and externally with consultants and other stakeholders.

  • Ability to track project status, monitor time versus budget, and identify potential issues early in the process.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • On the path to architectural licensure is preferred, indicating a commitment to professional development.

  • Experience with light commercial, retail, adaptive reuse, office, educational, institutional, and medical/healthcare projects.

  • Proficiency in SketchUp for 3D modeling and design visualization.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite for presentation materials and graphic communication.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for project documentation, reporting, and communication.

  • Ability to work effectively in small project teams, typically consisting of a project architect or project manager and two production-level architects.

  • Comfort working in a multidisciplinary environment that includes both architecture and MEP disciplines.

  • Flexibility to support a variety of project types and to move between different project groups as needed.

Work Environment

The role is based in a newly renovated office in the Hanover/Glen Burnie, Maryland area, offering a modern and comfortable workspace close to the airport. The office operates as a mixed architecture and MEP environment, supporting a diverse portfolio of projects including light commercial, retail, adaptive reuse, office, educational, institutional, and medical/healthcare facilities. Project teams are typically small and collaborative, often made up of a project architect or project manager and two production-level architects, with approximately 13 people in the Maryland office overall. The average workload is about 80 hours over a two-week period, with some weeks being longer than others, and there is flexibility to work from home when needed. The culture emphasizes a supportive and engaging atmosphere, featuring weekly happy hours, team outings, and the ability to move between different project types for broader experience. The organization offers 7 paid federal holidays plus 1 additional bonus holiday, along with 3 weeks of paid time off. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $52.88/hr.
