The IDNO Network Engineer is responsible for ensuring Sphere’s network design, engineering and technical standards are within strict adherence to the appropriate regulatory licence obligations and safety legislation for the electricity distribution network. This role will be the key technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for LV, HV and EHV network design across a nationwide portfolio of new distribution network assets.

As the SME, this role will act as a decision maker on engineering matters (engineering assurance sign off) within the Sphere team, providing key guidance to the Sphere Leadership team.

They will operate as the main technical interface with several Independent Connection Provider (ICP) Contractors managing their performance, quality and technical competency in the design of new Independent Distribution Networks (IDNOs). They will also act as the main liaison with the wider Distribution Network Operator (DNO) community and is responsible for working level industry engagement including with bodies such as the Energy Networks Association (ENA).

As the Sphere IDNO grows, the Network Engineer will be responsible for the management of customer requests to connect, alter or extend the Sphere network.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead on engineering design to facilitate construction of new IDNO assets through relationships with ICP contractors, including having the accountability for establishing and evolving strategy and processes to ensure a consistent approach to design, health and safety management, land rights and project delivery.

  • Ensure engineering deliverables are successfully achieved or accelerated to facilitate the expected growth of the Sphere IDNO business in terms of asset base and expected revenue.

  • Act as the technical SME for Sphere and decision maker on technical matters; enabling streamlined decisions and being a key interface for ICPs during project construction.

  • Manage different sized ICP contractors, ensuring a standardised design approach across entire portfolio of sites to be adopted by Sphere.

  • Capable of proposing new and advanced engineering solutions with ICPs to enable accelerated delivery of projects.

  • Ensure that Sphere Design Philosophy & Principles and policies are adhered to by ICPs.

  • Participate and direct cross-discipline transfer of expertise with fellow Sphere colleagues, acting as a key link for interactivity with other departments and enable holistic technical decisions.

  • Lead engineering governance, assurance and approval for design submissions made by ICPs, with thorough attention to detail in the development of new network assets for Sphere adoption. Including holding delegated authorisation responsibility.

  • Provide engineering oversight and troubleshooting for complex engineering problems, both in construction of new assets and for the connected assets of Sphere once constructed.

  • Represent Sphere’s engineering position, and interests, at senior industry, regulatory and public consultations where required .

  • Responsible for setting and maintaining company-wide professional engineering working standards, practices and pace of delivery, acting as an engineering role-model, setting aspirational targets and encouraging technical rigour.

    What you’ll bring

  • Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) or relevant experience, with postgraduate qualification preferred (MBA, Meng, MSc)

  • Proven experience of distribution network design and construction planning with expert knowledge of design standards up to 33kV.

  • Good commercial awareness with the ability to balance customer service and efficient network design whilst ensuring maximum return on investment.

  • Technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment. Experience of working with the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) preferred.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to prioritise and manage a diverse and demanding workload whilst under pressure.

  • Direct or indirect line management and leadership experience.

  • Capability to manage and influence challenging discussions / situations with internal and external relationships.

  • IT literate with the ability to operate MS Office systems, electrical analysis software and customer relationship management systems.
