SP Energy Networks (SPEN) plays a vital role in ensuring we keep up with the evolving way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy through the provision of services that are crucial to the delivery of the Government’s ambitious Net Zero and Low Carbon targets.

As our Business Development Lead, you will join our diverse and high performing Flexibility team which is a core part of the Distribution System Operation function.

Flexibility is about changing how our customers use energy, turning up or down at the right times to help manage an increasingly dynamic network. To incentivise this, we operate Flexibility Service Markets, engaging with a broad range of market participants from aggregators acting on behalf of domestic customers through to large generators.

It will be your responsibility to grow participation in SPEN Flexiblity markets. Flexibility will help unlock cleaner generation, faster electrification, and consumer‑driven energy. To do this we procure Flexibility Services to support:

  • Network Investment – Deferring the need for network investment or supporting the deliverability of investment to ensure that customers can connect to our network and reduce overall costs for consumers.

  • Network Operability – Customers providing support during planned or unplanned outages driven by planned outages or severe weather events.

What you’ll be doing

Business Development & Market Engagement

  • Facilitating market access, for existing and new Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) guiding them through the provider journey from Exploration, Onboarding, Scheduling and Dispatch.

  • Management of Tenders for procuring Flex (Monthly, Day Ahead, Bi-lateral)

  • Support our overall Flexibility Market Engagement Strategy, through 1:1 engagement with Flexibility Service Providers, webinars and representing SPEN at industry events alongside publicising our success on social media, our website, and other channels.

  • Attending and hosting Industry events representing SPEN and DSO Flex Team promoting our products and influencing stakeholders

Product Development

  • Developing new and existing uses of flex for the distribution network using market and stakeholder insight to develop products

  • Development of real and shorter-term modelling to inform procurement of flex

  • Working with our FSPs to gain insight that will inform the continuous improvement of our market and the tools and processes we use to procure Flex

Commercial Analysis & Market Intelligence

  • Designing and writing content for short and long-term market signals via publications such as our Participation Guidance & Market Prospectus.

  • Benchmarking our products and services against competing markets

  • Developing of real time and shorter-term modelling to inform procurement of flex

Governance & Regulatory Obligations

  • Collaborating with Market Facilitator ensuring implementation and adherence of Market Rules

  • Input into the design and delivery of KPIs and reporting requirements for our Market facilitator Elexon.

  • Influencing and shaping the regulatory landscape via participation in Industry working Groups (Elexon, NESO, DESNZ) ensuring products and processes are streamlined and align to national Flex markets in GB.

What you’ll bring

  • High commercial awareness with a background in ancillary balancing and services markets an advantage.

  • Experience of contract management and administration from negotiation to delivery

  • Strong communicator with a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to simplify a complex subject matter

  • Ability to influence, foster and build relationships

  • Experience of engaging with stakeholders and or Ofgem in a regulated environment

  • Effective at leading and managing change in a complex environment and creating a culture of engagement and positivity.

  • Ability to prioritise and manage a very diverse & demanding workload
