Job Title: Nurse Case Manager – Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Care

Job Description

This role focuses on providing comprehensive pre-operative assessments, coordinating surgical preparation, and delivering post-operative follow-up for patients in a surgery center setting. The nurse case manager ensures that patients and their families understand the surgical process, supports their physical and emotional needs, and maintains accurate clinical documentation to promote safe, efficient, and high-quality care.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complete pre-operative assessments, including thorough review of patient history, current medications, allergies, and emotional status.

  • Perform and document all required pre-operative testing, such as laboratory work, and promptly report abnormal values to anesthesia providers or the surgeon.

  • Explain surgical consents, patient rights and responsibilities, and pre- and post-operative instructions in a clear and compassionate manner, and obtain all required signatures.

  • Communicate clearly with patients and families about the surgical process and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

  • Provide comfort, reassurance, and emotional support while protecting patients’ rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

  • Coordinate with anesthesia providers to ensure all assessment findings and test results are reviewed prior to their evaluations.

  • Complete pre-admission checklists and ensure smooth transition of documentation and information to the operating room team.

  • Verify that all patient records and documentation are complete, accurate, and available for review on the day before surgery.

  • Organize, prioritize, and efficiently track surgical patients and documentation to maintain continuity and flow of the surgical schedule.

  • Initiate pre-operative phone calls 1–2 days prior to surgery to review patient history, medications, and pre-operative instructions.

  • Communicate with surgeon office staff to obtain any missing or required paperwork needed for surgery.

  • Obtain and review patient records related to pre-operative testing and ensure all required documentation is on file.

  • Perform follow-up phone calls to all post-surgical patients to answer questions, assess recovery needs, and direct patients to the surgeon’s office when appropriate.

  • Document and file all post-operative phone call interactions in the patient chart in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and organization in the pre-operative and recovery areas in compliance with infection control standards.

  • Assist with inventory management of drugs, supplies, and equipment in the pre-operative area, ensuring items are available and stored appropriately.

  • Use clinical equipment safely and effectively, anticipating patient needs and responding promptly to changes in condition.

  • Follow all accepted standards of nursing practice and verify that procedures are completed correctly and safely.

  • Provide administrative support related to case management, treatment plans, and assessments as needed.

  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members across multiple functions to support high-quality patient care.

  • Adapt to a fast-growing, dynamic work environment and manage ambiguity while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and outcomes.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the surgery center.

Essential Skills

  • Active registered nurse (RN) license in Maryland or a Compact state.

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in an outpatient surgery center or hospital pre-operative unit.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

  • Demonstrated experience in pre-operative assessment and case management.

  • Experience in orthopedics and pre-operative care within a healthcare setting.

  • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Experience providing administrative support related to healthcare, treatment plans, and assessments.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across multiple functions in a decentralized organization.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop relationships, collaborate, and influence across teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with a track record of achieving results.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with excellent self-discipline and patience.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent time management, organizational, and administrative skills.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate clearly in the English language.

Work Environment

This position is based in a surgery center environment focused on orthopedic and surgical care. The role involves working in pre-operative and recovery areas, with frequent interaction with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and administrative staff. You will regularly use clinical and office equipment, including medical devices, computers, keyboards, fax machines, scanners, photocopiers, and telephones. The work requires sitting for long periods as well as frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, squatting, and repetitive hand movements. You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and use proper body mechanics for patient transfers and assistance with exercises. The position involves some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling throughout a standard work shift. Adequate hearing and visual acuity are necessary to perform duties safely in person and over the telephone, including reading printed materials and computer screens. The clinical setting includes exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to healthcare environments. This is a Contract position based out of Gaithersburg, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
