Job Title: GIS Technician

Job Description

We are seeking three GIS Technicians to support the maintenance and accuracy of the electric distribution Geographic Information System (GIS). This role focuses on data updates, asset mapping, and ensuring the system-of-record accuracy for the electric distribution network. The GIS Technician will collaborate closely with GIS Analysts, engineers, operations staff, and field personnel to ensure the GIS reflects current field conditions and supports daily operations and outage response.

Responsibilities

  • Update and maintain electric distribution GIS data, including poles, lines, devices, services, and related assets.

  • Process as-built drawings, field notes, and work orders into the system.

  • Perform data entry, editing, and validation to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  • Support operations and outage response through timely GIS updates.

  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control checks, correcting data discrepancies.

  • Generate basic maps and GIS outputs for internal use.

  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, vegetation management, and field crews to resolve issues.

  • Adhere to established GIS standards, procedures, and documentation requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Geospatial Information Sciences, GIS, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience, preferably in utility or infrastructure.

  • Experience with Esri GIS tools (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online).

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a production, operations-focused environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting electric utility GIS or linear infrastructure assets.

  • Familiarity with as-built processing, field-to-GIS workflows, or asset mapping.

  • Experience working with engineering or operations teams.

  • Experience in cooperative, municipal utility, or regulated utility environments.

Work Environment

The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. The organization is a stable, member-owned electric cooperative where GIS directly supports operations and outage response. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fredericksburg, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $42.00/hr.
