Max Mothes Nut Former Operator in Fraser, Michigan
POSITION SUMMARY The Nut Former Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring multi-station cold-heading nut forming machines to produce nuts and fasteners to specification. This role ensures product quality, machine efficiency, and safe operation of equipment while maintaining production flow.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set up and operate nut forming machines (multi-station cold headers).
- Load wire/coil material and ensure proper feed rates.
- Adjust machine parameters (dies, punches, cutters, transfer fingers, etc.).
- Interpret blueprints, job travelers, and production specifications.
- Monitor machine during operation; make minor adjustments to maintain quality.
- Perform quality inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring tools.
- Replace tooling when worn or damaged; assist with die changes.
- Maintain accurate production, scrap, and downtime records.
- Conduct basic machine maintenance and lubrication.
- Troubleshoot issues related to forming, feeding, tooling, and material.
- Follow all safety rules, including lockout/tagout and PPE requirements.
- Keep work area clean and organized according to 5S standards.
- Communicate issues to supervisors, tool room, and maintenance as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 1--3 years of experience operating cold headers/nut formers or similar equipment (preferred).
- Mechanical aptitude and hands-on machine experience required.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read blueprints and work instructions.
- Skilled in using precision measurement instruments.
- Basic understanding of tooling, dies, punches, and machine adjustments.
- Strong problem-solving and mechanical troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset.
WORKING CONDITIONS Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, oils, lubricants, and moving machinery. PPE required (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, etc.). Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and machine interaction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs. Manual dexterity for handling tooling and machine adjustments. Full mobility to stand, walk, reach, stoop, and perform repetitive motions.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives. Assist with training new operators. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
