General Overview

The overall function of this position is to assist the Project Engineer in the activities of the Project Engineer's office located in District 62, by engaging in construction inspection and supervision duties. This position is responsible for assuring high quality construction work in accordance with plans, specifications, and contract provisions. Incumbent may be required to perform duties in extreme conditions (rain, heat, or cold, day or night), to use a state vehicle for parish wide travel, and to lift items up to 45 lbs. Structured training requirements must be met and maintained. The person filling this position is required to possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license. While in an official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Prepares and assists in the preparation of daily diaries, weekly reports, field book record keeping, quantities for plan changes, partial and final estimates, 2059 reports, errors, and omissions reports, storm water inspection reports and project finalizations.

  • Performs sub- professional engineering work in the area of construction inspection and surveying to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Use independent judgement in planning work and making technical decisions not requiring engineering knowledge of a professional nature.

  • Collects and records the testing/ sampling of material used on construction projects and verifies acceptable results. Performs and assists other co- workers when inspecting for quality control and quality assurance for construction projects. Monitors and inspects work done by the contractors for compliance with plans and specifications.

  • Computes and/or checks construction quantities including, but not limited to, earthwork, field book accuracy, benchmark verification, survey data, and other required data necessary to ensure it meets the requirements of the contract special provisions, plans, and other standard specifications. Performs inspection on parish wide permits and prepares utility diaries for filing.

  • May be required to perform other additional duties including but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational

The incumbent is required to perform the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:

  • Valid driver's license at time of appointment

  • Operate a state-owned vehicle, computer, surveying equipment, etc.

  • Perform duties in extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold, or heat

  • May be required to lift items up to 50 lbs

  • Submit to random drug testing as required

Compensation: Salary is dependent upon qualifications. Below is the starting hourly rate and Premium Pay for this position.

  • Construction Inspector 1

  • Starting salary is $14.98/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked, and an additional $2.00/hour for hours worked between 6 PM - 6 AM on assigned nighttime construction projects.
