Job Title: R&D Formulation Chemist
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced R&D Formulation Chemist to lead the development and optimization of high-performance waterborne traffic paint systems. This role focuses on improving durability, brightness, dry time, rheology control, and overall performance to meet and exceed state DOT specifications.
Responsibilities
Formulate and optimize waterborne acrylic traffic paint systems.
Evaluate and select resin systems, including acrylic latex and specialty binders.
Improve brightness and hiding power.
Optimize dry time and viscosity balance.
Conduct lab-scale formulations and pilot plant trials.
Conduct performance evaluations such as dry time, no-track performance, film build, application properties, durability, scrub resistance, and storage stability.
Analyze test data and refine formulations accordingly.
Support plant trials and initial production runs.
Troubleshoot manufacturing scale-up challenges.
Recommend raw material substitutions as needed.
Develop next-generation systems with high build, faster dry times, and improved retroreflectivity support.
Work collaboratively with the materials team when needed.
Support technical documentation for DOT submittals and NTPEP programs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Materials Science (Master’s preferred).
3–7 years experience in coatings formulation.
Strong knowledge of waterborne acrylic systems.
Experience with rheology control and pigment dispersion.
Work Environment
This role is based in a small site with approximately 30 people, where everyone enjoys working. The company is growing and seeks someone who can make an impact from day one. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, first shift, with typical hours ranging from 6:00–2:30 or 7:00–3:30. The culture is flexible, and earlier starts are welcomed.

This is a Contract position based out of Franklin, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
