Job Summary:
The Surveying Summer Intern works under the direction of the Surveyor to assist with field and office surveying activities for private, commercial, and public construction projects. This role provides hands-on experience in construction surveying, including layout, data collection, and field support.
The intern will gain exposure to real-world applications of surveying principles and contribute to various aspects of heavy highway and civil construction projects while learning industry practices and technology.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
Assists in the layout of private, commercial, and governmental construction projects.
Performs field measurements for construction site layout and verification.
Assists with topographic, route, and as-built surveys.
Collects and downloads survey data using modern surveying equipment.
Utilizes survey instruments and software to perform calculations and complete layouts.
Supports quality control checks to ensure accuracy of survey data.
Works with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to identify and resolve discrepancies in plans, staking, and site conditions.
Assists in preparing sketches, schematics, and survey documentation.
Maintains familiarity with surveying technology, tools, and best practices.
Provides general support to the Surveyor and surveying team.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
Assists others in department as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
Basic understanding of surveying principles (through coursework or training).
Ability to learn and operate surveying equipment (GPS, total stations, data collectors).
Familiarity with or willingness to learn AutoCAD and Trimble Business Center.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measurements and data collection.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings (preferred).
Strong math skills, including algebra and geometry.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Demonstrates dependability, punctuality, and strong work ethic.
Commitment to safety and adherence to company policies.
Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.
Education and Experience
Must be enrolled in or have completed at least freshman year at an accredited post-secondary institution.
Pursuing a degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
Minimum GPA of 2.5 preferred.
Prior internship or field experience is a plus but not required.
Reliable transportation required.
Physical Requirements
Lifting/Carrying: Up to 50 lbs frequently
Pushing/Pulling: Up to 50 lbs frequently
Driving: Regular driving of automatic and possibly standard transmission vehicles
Movement Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, and keyboarding; occasional sitting, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, crawling, and reaching above shoulder level
Use of Hands: Frequent use of hands for keyboarding and handling materials
Environmental Exposure: Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat, dust, wet surfaces, uneven terrain, and standing on concrete; frequent travel; frequent work in both indoor and outdoor environments
Working Environment
Combination of field and office work, with primary emphasis on field surveying.
Regular exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, cold, rain, mud, and dust.
Work performed on active construction sites with appropriate safety requirements.
Interaction with internal teams including foremen, superintendents, and project managers.
