Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Principal, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills by implementing district approved curriculum, documenting student progress and outcomes, addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment. Provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations and goals.

At the middle school level, the Family and Consumer Science teacher provides exploratory courses that may include units in basic cooking and nutrition, personal responsibility, child development, consumer skills, and introductory life skills. The position works closely within a Professional Learning Community (PLC) alongside other exploratory teachers to align curriculum, support interdisciplinary connections, and create engaging, hands-on learning experiences for students. We are looking for a candidate who can foster a positive classroom environment, build foundational life skills, and contribute to a collaborative team focused on student growth and exploration.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and delivers middle school exploratory curriculum aligned with district goals and designed to introduce students to foundational life skills, including nutrition, basic cooking, personal responsibility, and consumer awareness.

  • Creates a welcoming, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that encourages student exploration and participation.

  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe, structured, and conducive to hands-on, small group, and individualized learning experiences.

  • Designs lesson plans and instructional materials that emphasize practical application and active learning, translating concepts into meaningful student experiences.

  • Monitors student progress through ongoing assessment and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including those of students with special needs.

  • Collaborates as part of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) with other exploratory teachers to align curriculum, share strategies, and support interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student progress, participation, and attendance in accordance with district procedures.

  • Communicates effectively with students, families, and staff to support student success and encourage family engagement.

  • Establishes and maintains clear expectations for student behavior, supporting a positive and productive learning environment aligned with school policies.

  • Participates in team meetings, staff development, and professional growth opportunities to remain current with best practices in middle school education.

  • Selects and maintains appropriate instructional materials, supplies, and equipment to support hands-on learning experiences.

  • Supervises students in classroom and school settings, including non-instructional times such as transitions and lunch as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Reliable work attendance is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field applicable to senior high school education.

  • License issued by Iowa BoEE for middle school teaching.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy enabling differentiation

  • Knowledge of senior high school curriculum and concepts.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

  • Ability to use computer network system, technology devices and software applications.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, coworkers and the greater community.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

    Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

*Teachers will not be eligible for future sign-on bonuses if rehired within 3 years of separation. A teacher will not be eligible for a sign-on bonus if a prior bonus has been offered and accepted. If a teacher is terminated before a full year of employment or abandons their contract they will be required to repay the sign-on bonus at time of separation.
