Job Description
Position Summary
Colorado State University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre in the areas of Performance/Directing, starting Fall 2026. This is a 9-month, continuing, non-tenure-track position. The Assistant Teaching Professor’s responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate performance courses, at multiple levels, in acting, directing, playwriting, and dramaturgy, as well as additional courses that support the broader theatre curriculum and align with the candidate’s specific teaching strengths and professional expertise. The successful candidate will direct or support productions in our main stage season and advise and mentor students for productions. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching and a developing practice in research/creative artistry.
Candidates will be expected to collaborate effectively with faculty colleagues, staff, and students in the creation of artistic work. Candidates will be expected to participate in the department’s shared governance, support curriculum development, recruit and mentor theatre students, contribute to the operation and development of an active production season, and advance the reputation and visibility of the University regionally, nationally, and/or internationally. Advancement at Colorado State University requires ongoing professional activity, engaged scholarship and creative artistry, effective teaching and advising, and departmental and university service.

Essential Job Duties:
(70%) Teach a 3/4 course load. Teach undergraduate performance courses, at multiple levels, in acting, directing, playwriting, and dramaturgy, as well as courses that support the entire theatre program, depending on the candidate’s teaching qualifications and abilities. The successful candidate will direct or support productions in our main stage season and advise and mentor students for productions.
(10%) Engage in ongoing professional activity, engaged scholarship, and/or creative artistry appropriate to the disciplines of performance and directing, or other area of specialty within the craft of theatre or film.
(20%) Candidates are expected to participate in the shared governance of the department, support curriculum development, recruit and mentor theatre students, contribute towards the operation and development of an active production season, and advance the reputation and visibility of the University regionally, nationally, and/or internationally.

Minimum Qualifications
Terminal degree in Theatre or related field, or 7 years of significant, high-caliber theatre or entertainment industry experience.
Evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, demonstrated via a teaching philosophy statement and a clear record of commitment to undergraduate teaching, student supervision, and mentorship.
Evidence of a practice in creative/research artistry.
Preferred Qualifications
2+ years’ experience teaching theatre at the undergraduate level
Evidence of additional area(s) of teaching expertise depending on the candidate’s teaching qualifications and abilities: Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Dramaturgy, World Theatre History, Script/Text Analysis, Introduction to Theatre, and/or expertise in performance traditions and practices outside the Western canon.
Active membership in at least one union or professional organization and/or knowledge and/or experience in the professional industry.
