Summary of Position

The Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting the safe execution of surface preparation, coating activities, and mechanical restoration needs on construction projects. This field-focused position emphasizes hazard identification and the implementation of direct controls and safeguards to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) associated with related construction operations. Working closely with Operations, Project Management and Field Leadership, this role ensures safety planning is effectively integrated into daily work practices, while serving as a mentor to foremen and crews promoting a culture of working safely.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepare project safety plans and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for abrasive blasting, spray coating, surface preparation, pressure washing, mechanical installation and associated construction activities, ensuring emphasis on direct controls and safeguards that eliminate and mitigate hazardous energies.
  2. Maintain a strong field presence to assist operational personnel with high-risk activities, including real-time hazard recognition and implementation of effective controls during operations.
  3. Mentor and build capacity in foremen and craft workers to enable them to recognize hazards, apply direct controls, safeguards, and make safe operational decisions.
  4. Conduct daily field observations and inspections of blasting equipment, spray systems, containment, ventilation, fall protection, scaffolds, rigging, task-specific PPE, and more to verify compliance with OSHA 1926 standards.
  5. Support pre-task planning, management of change, daily worker safety engagements, and incident/near-miss investigations with a focus on continuous improvement.
  6. Prepare, present, and deliver safety training; facilitate safety meetings; and represent safety at project kickoff meetings.
  7. Provide practical guidance on confined space, fall protection, respiratory protection, hazardous communication, chemical storage, and other regulatory requirements.
  8. Maintain accurate records of safety plans, inspections, observations, and corrective actions.
  9. Empowered to intervene and stop work when imminent hazards or unsafe conditions are observed.
