FAIRFAX COUNTY Active Transportation Planner III (Transportation Planner III) in Fairfax, Virginia
Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking a motivated, highly qualified, and public service-oriented Active Transportation Planner III to join the Active Transportation Programs Team in the Capital Projects Section.
The position is primarily responsible for managing the Fairfax County Capital Bikeshare program, supporting new shared micromobility transportation options, and contributing to the development, design, review, and management of a wide range of active transportation projects, studies, and programs, that advance the Countys vision for creating connected streets, sidewalks, bikeways and trails.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing Capital Bikeshare and other shared micromobility programs, including planning and executing expansions, seeking grant funding, monitoring operations, tracking and reporting, requesting maintenance, managing inventory, and working with regional partners to improve system and increase ridership
- Developing and reviewing consultant proposals, scopes of work, project deliverables, budgets, and schedules, and administering consultant contracts for planning studies, feasibility studies, and conceptual project designs
- Preparing and communicating technical reports, status reports, meeting summaries, letters, official items for Board of Supervisors consideration, and other documents, as required
- Preparing presentations for and serving as a subject matter expert at project-related public meetings, briefings for senior leadership and/or elected officials, and other audiences, as required to meet specific audience needs
- Attending other project-related meetings, both in-person and virtual, including occasional evenings and weekends
- Other duties may include:
- Analyzing and reviewing existing transportation infrastructure, and utilizing Fairfax County, Virginia Department of Transportation, and national manuals and design guides to recommend improvements for active transportation safety, access, and comfort.
- Developing scoping documents and reviewing designs for multimodal transportation projects including signalized and unsignalized intersection improvements, crosswalk improvements, shared-use paths, sidewalks, cycletracks/separated bike lanes, and signage/striping improvements.
- Identifying need, location, and scope of new pedestrian, bicycle, trail, and shared micromobility facilities and equipment.
- Researching, gathering, interpreting, and preparing data for studies, policies, and comprehensive planning efforts.
- Developing and implementing plans and maps for wayfinding and other bicycle or pedestrian specific signage.
- Analyzing and reviewing development site plans for compliance with the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan and best practices and developing recommendations for improvements.
