Job Title: Electromechanical Technician – Next-Generation Rail Vehicles (Contract)

Job Description

This contract role offers the opportunity to work as part of an on-site technical team supporting next-generation diesel locomotives and passenger coaches. You will contribute directly to production activities that span mechanical, electrical, and software-related tasks in a complex rail-industry environment. The work changes from day to day and requires a highly skilled, adaptable technician who can step in quickly and add value with minimal training.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on mechanical work on diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, including installation, assembly, and general mechanical tasks.

  • Carry out advanced electrical troubleshooting using electrical schematics, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools to identify and resolve faults.

  • Read, interpret, and apply electrical schematics confidently to support both troubleshooting and installation activities.

  • Work on a wide range of systems, including engines, electrical components, and supporting systems across the rail vehicles.

  • Perform general production tasks such as part removal, component replacement, and cleanup to support efficient workflow.

  • Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialty tools to complete mechanical and electrical tasks safely and accurately.

  • Apply knowledge of software logic and system communication (such as IP addresses and system-to-system communication) when required to support system integration and diagnostics.

  • Collaborate closely with the on-site technical team to support a fast-paced project focused on completing a full train build within an estimated 3–6 month timeframe.

  • Follow established safety procedures, quality standards, and documentation practices while performing all work.

  • Adapt to changing daily priorities and tasks within a complex rail production environment, maintaining a high level of workmanship and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in electromechanical work, maintenance, or troubleshooting in an industrial, manufacturing, or similar technical environment.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems.

  • Proven ability to read, understand, and apply electrical schematics for troubleshooting and installation.

  • Mechanical and electrical hands-on experience using a wide range of tools, including wrenches, multimeters, power tools, and specialty tools.

  • Solid experience performing mechanical repair, installation, and maintenance tasks.

  • Experience using multimeters and other diagnostic equipment for electrical testing and verification.

  • Ability to work with hydraulics and pneumatics in an electromechanical context.

  • Capability to interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams, and technical documentation.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced production environment with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and adherence to procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in software or system logic, including understanding of system communication and IP-based communication, is a strong asset.

  • Rail industry experience is an advantage but not required.

  • Experience working on engines, large mechanical systems, or complex industrial equipment is beneficial.

  • Familiarity with general production tasks such as component removal, reinstallation, and workstation cleanup.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within an on-site technical team and communicate clearly about technical issues and solutions.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role in a rail production facility located in Etobicoke, ON. You will work Monday to Friday on a first shift schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The environment is hands-on and industrial, involving work on diesel locomotives and passenger coaches using hand tools, power tools, multimeters, and specialty equipment. The pace is fast and project-driven, focused on completing full train builds within defined timelines. You can expect a shop-floor setting with active production, where adherence to safety procedures and appropriate workwear and protective equipment is essential.

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
