GEM COUNTY SOLID WASTE

JOB TITLE: Scale Operator DATE: 3/2/2026

DEPARTMENT: Gem County Solid Waste

REPORTS TO: Solid Waste Supervisor

SALARY: \$17.48 - \$19.42/hour DOE

CLOSING DATE: Open until filled

BENEFITS: Medical/Dental/Vision/Life Insurance paid for employee, PERSI Retirement, Sick Leave,

SUMMARY

The primary function of an employee in this class is to operate the scale (weighing in vehicles as they enter and

exit the facility)and to check incoming loads to ascertain what is being dumped, if item(s) are accepted to dump,

if a charge will apply and information to customers as to where items should be dumped. Must be able to

communicate well with the general public as this position has a high level of public interaction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate scale, cash register, credit card machine and have understanding of the prices for chargeable items

brought in to the transfer station.

Communicate effectively with members of the public regarding operations.

Check loads coming in to the facility.

Direct vehicles to proper dump site areas.

Collect fees in accordance with written guidelines.

Accounts Payable (invoices and payments of charge customers).

Responsible to record tonnage, tires, green waste, and vehicles and report totals to Solid Waste

Supervisor.

Keep records of employee time worked, vacation days and sick days.

Answer telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Accounting or bookkeeping practices as it relates to accepting payment, counting change, cashing out the

till after each shift, processing credit card reports, tallying and reporting cash, checks, etc. payments.

Basic understanding of computer, office procedures, and printing reports.

Ability to:

Ability to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively with the public and other employees on

the telephone and in person.

Ability to comprehend written instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written/typed

documents and materials.

Ability to operate a computer as well as standard and specialized office equipment.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Customer service experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to pass random U.A. testing.

Must be available to work up to 5 days per week, including Saturday.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, to sit and work at a keyboard for an extended period of time and work in an

office environment.

Ability to work in varying conditions indoors and outdoors.

Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull.
