Omaha Public Power District Senior Protection Engineer in Elkhorn, Nebraska
As part of Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) one of the nation's largest publicly owned electric utilities serving more than 850,000 people, the Senior Engineer-Protection supports OPPD's mission to provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally sensitive energy services. This role delivers advanced protection system engineering across OPPD's generation, transmission, and distribution systems, ensuring safe, reliable power delivery for the communities we serve.
The Impact You'll Have
Ensure reliable operation of OPPD¿s generation, transmission, and distribution systems by delivering protection system design and application engineering.
Strengthen system performance by reviewing relay operations and analyzing outages and disturbances to identify causes and implement corrective actions.
Improve system resilience by resolving operational control problems caused by faults, short circuits, or other disturbances.
Support the safe integration of distributed energy resources by delivering protection engineering for customer and utility-scale interconnections.
Contribute to OPPD¿s future generation capabilities by supporting new capacity additions and system upgrade projects.
Uphold regulatory requirements by supporting departmental compliance initiatives.
Maintain system readiness by staying current with advancements in protection technologies and applying innovations to District systems.
Provide critical support during system emergencies with 24/7 availability for technical guidance, emergency response, and direct corrective action.
What You'll Bring

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
Five years of protection engineering experience related to substation, transmission, or distribution systems
Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in Nebraska, or ability to obtain registration via reciprocity within six months
Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
Co-op, internship, or other relevant practical engineering experience
Electric utility engineering experience in system protection
Strong written and verbal communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
Ability to self-start, manage multiple tasks, and drive timely, accurate results
Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and openness to improvement and change

Essential Position: This position will be required to report to work when business continuity needs are emergent and may be required to work hours beyond an employee¿s normal shift.
This position must be available for overtime work and callouts as required to ensure continuance of efficient operation.

Office: Work will be performed in a modern office environment amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises.
Field: Work will be performed outside in a wide variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, wind, etc.), terrain, and other natural environmental hazards as well as pollen and other airborne allergens.

Physical Demands:
