Omaha Public Power District Protection Engineer I in Elkhorn, Nebraska

As an Engineer I on our Protection & Automation Engineering team, you will help support the systems that power more than 850,000 residents across the region. This is an excellent opportunity to begin building your technical foundation in protection engineering while contributing directly to the safe and reliable operation of a modern electric grid.

The Impact You'll Have

  • Strengthen grid reliability by supporting protection system design and application engineering for generation, transmission, and distribution facilities.

  • Improve operational performance by reviewing protective relay operations and assisting with outage analysis.

  • Support rapid system restoration by helping resolve issues caused by short circuits or other disturbances.

  • Enable clean energy integration by assisting with protection engineering for distributed resource interconnections.

  • Contribute to regulatory compliance by supporting documentation and engineering activities related to protection systems.

  • Enhance system dependability by staying current with industry technologies and modern protection practices.

  • Improve emergency response readiness by providing availability for technical support when needed.

  • Promote a safe work environment by adhering to OPPD safety policies and identifying potential hazards.

    What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively.

    Preferred

  • Co-op, internship, or prior engineering experience.

  • Exposure to protection engineering, substation design, or power system operations.

  • Strong initiative, ownership of work, and interest in continuous improvement

    Time Demands:

    Essential Position: This position will be required to report to work when business continuity needs are emergent and may be required to work hours beyond an employee's normal shift.

    This position must be available for overtime work and callouts as required to ensure continuance of efficient operation.

    Work Location:

    Office: Work will be performed in a modern office environment amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises.

    Field: Work will be performed outside in a wide variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, wind, etc.), terrain, and other natural environmental hazards as well as pollen and other airborne allergens.

    Work Environment: Choose all that apply.

    Work will be performed in high traffic environments.

    Will work around energies high voltage electrical equipment.

    Will work in construction areas that present many physical hazards.

    Will work at heights.

    Physical Demands:

    Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.

    Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.

Grade: S3

Minimum: $81,905

Midpoint: $102,381
