This position maintains Park and Recreation department buildings, grounds, open spaces, trails, and parks. Operates and maintains light equipment and may operate heavy equipment. This position is part of the IUOE Local 49 union. Minimum requirements include a high school diploma, 2 years work related experience, a valid driver's license, and ability to obtain Class A CDL within 6 months of hire. Position SummaryThe Park Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and operation of Park and Recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, trails, and parks. Operates and maintains light equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Performs turf maintenance activities.

  • Mows, fertilizes, aerates, and weeds city properties.

  • Establishes turf areas through tilling, seeding, and sodding.

  • Maintains in-ground turf irrigation systems including repairs and adjustments.

  • Establishes and maintains landscape materials including trees, shrubs, and flowers.

  • Performs park construction and maintenance activities.

  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings, containers, and grounds.

  • Installs, constructs, inspects, and maintains beaches, grounds, playground structures, or other park and athletic facilities using light equipment, and manual labor.

  • Prepares athletic fields for scheduled events and activities including dragging, lining, and minor grading.

  • Maintains athletic courts including tennis, volleyball, and basketball.

  • Performs general building and shelter custodial activities including cleaning of kitchens, tables, grill slabs, and other amenities.

  • Establishes and maintains outdoor ice surfaces and rinks by flooding with truck or hose, sweeping, blowing or shoveling snow, moving and setting up boards and nets.

  • Performs light duty repairs and maintenance including painting and maintaining lighting.

  • Carries out some construction projects utilizing wood, concrete, and other building materials.

  • Performs tree watering, cutting, trimming, pruning, and removal. Chips brush and tree trunks.

  • Performs trail maintenance including sweeping, patching and crack repairs.

  • Performs other essential job duties.

  • Removes snow from park trails, sidewalks, parking lots, building entrances, steps, cul-de-sacs, and streets as needed.

  • Assists with preparations for special events and activities.

  • Keeps Park Supervisor or Lead Park Maintenance Worker informed of progress and job status.

  • Regular and timely work attendance.

  • Follows all safety procedures.

  • Participates in safety training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to operate light motorized park maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to perform light equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to safely complete minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work utilizing power hand tools.

  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), walk and stand for long periods, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two years related education or work experience including operating light equipment.

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Related specialized training beyond high school.

  • Experience working in a park department.

WORK SCHEDULENormal work day is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.Summer work schedule during Daylight Savings Time is 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday.Employees may be required to work very early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays due to snow events, projects, and special events. Weekend rotation hours will also be required for splashpad testing and park events.
