Job Title: Field Service Engineer

Job Description

The Field Service Engineer provides on-site electrical and controls engineering support for new equipment and system introductions, ensuring reliable installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of advanced industrial machinery. This role combines hands-on technical work with customer-facing responsibilities, requiring strong expertise in control systems, electro-mechanical equipment, and system integration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical and controls engineering expertise to support the introduction, installation, and optimization of new equipment and systems at customer sites.

  • Serve as an internal subject matter expert in control systems, including Siemens PLCs, HMIs, motion control systems, sensors, and electromechanical devices.

  • Apply knowledge of electronics, electrical circuits, mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and programming to diagnose and resolve complex equipment issues.

  • Travel to customer facilities to perform machine commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Perform PLC programming and adjustments to optimize machine performance and resolve control-related issues.

  • Troubleshoot CNC equipment and NC controllers, including Siemens 840D and WINCC, to restore proper operation and minimize downtime.

  • Diagnose and repair electrical control panels, ensuring safe and reliable operation in accordance with design and industry standards.

  • Install, assemble, and adjust components such as sensors, motion systems, pneumatic and hydraulic devices, and related mechanical assemblies.

  • Use precision measurement equipment, such as dial indicators and calipers, to align, calibrate, and verify machine components and systems.

  • Document all service activities by maintaining accurate logs and written records of duties performed, issues identified, and corrective actions taken.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors to coordinate service activities and provide technical guidance.

  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime, to support customer needs and urgent service requirements.

  • Safely work at heights and operate aerial platforms when required for installation, inspection, or repair tasks.

Essential Skills

  • Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices and principles.

  • Expertise in machine and motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems, robotics, programming, and system integration.

  • Proficiency with control systems including Siemens PLCs, HMIs, and motion control systems.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot electrical control panels and related documentation.

  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting CNC equipment and NC controllers, particularly Siemens 840D and WINCC.

  • Solid understanding of PLC programming languages and their application in industrial automation.

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills in electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Ability to use precision measurement tools such as dial indicators and calipers for alignment and calibration.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with teams, clients, and vendors.

  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently to customer sites, with an expectation of 50–70% travel.

  • Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.

  • Ability to safely use aerial platforms and work at heights.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in field service roles involving installation, commissioning, and repair of industrial or CNC equipment.

  • Experience in assembly, installation, and repair of electro-mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Familiarity with service documentation practices, including maintaining detailed logs and service reports.

  • Comfort working independently at customer sites while representing the company in a professional manner.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with frequent travel to customer facilities estimated at 50–70% of the time. Work takes place in industrial and manufacturing environments, where you will install, commission, troubleshoot, and repair equipment such as CNC machines, control panels, and motion control systems. You will regularly work with Siemens PLCs, HMIs, motion control systems, sensors, electromechanical devices, and precision measurement tools like dial indicators and calipers. The position may require working at heights and using aerial platforms, as well as flexible scheduling that can include evenings, weekends, and overtime to meet customer needs. The environment is hands-on, technical, and collaborative, involving close interaction with customers, internal engineering teams, and vendors.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elk Grove Village, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $43.00/hr.
