FANUC CNC Programmer and Operator

Job Description

This role focuses on programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines equipped with FANUC controls to produce high-quality precision parts in accordance with detailed engineering specifications. You will work hands-on in a production environment, ensuring accurate, efficient machining while collaborating closely with engineering, machining, and quality teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and edit CNC programs using FANUC controls for milling and/or turning operations.

  • Set up CNC machines, including selecting appropriate tooling, loading programs, and establishing correct offsets and parameters.

  • Operate CNC machines to produce parts that meet engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T symbols, and complex technical drawings to determine machining requirements.

  • Perform first article inspections and make program or setup adjustments to achieve tight tolerances and dimensional accuracy.

  • Optimize CNC programs to improve cycle time, tool life, and overall production efficiency.

  • Troubleshoot machining issues, including dimensional deviations, surface finish concerns, and tooling problems, and implement corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality control personnel to ensure part accuracy and process reliability.

  • Perform routine checks and preventive maintenance on CNC machines to maintain consistent performance.

  • Work within a dedicated CNC area with multiple pieces of equipment, focusing on setting up and programming machines with FANUC controls.

  • Float within the CNC area as needed to assist with setups, programming support, and problem-solving across different machines.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience programming CNC machines with FANUC controls.

  • Proficiency in CNC programming, including creating and editing programs directly at the machine or through FANUC interfaces.

  • Strong knowledge of G-code and M-code and their application in milling and turning operations.

  • Hands-on experience with CNC turning centers, including those with hydraulic tailstocks.

  • Experience working with MSC-518 FANUC control systems.

  • Proven ability to set up CNC machines, including tooling selection, workholding, and establishing proper offsets.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T symbols.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and correct machining and programming issues.

  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality parts.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical certification or associate degree in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field is preferred.

  • Experience performing first article inspections and making adjustments to meet tight tolerances.

  • Background in optimizing CNC programs for efficiency, tool life, and production speed.

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as engineering, machining, and quality control.

  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices for CNC equipment.

  • Comfort working with multiple machines in a shared production area and supporting others as needed.

Work Environment

You will work in a dedicated CNC area that houses approximately six to seven pieces of equipment, primarily CNC machines equipped with FANUC controls, including turning centers with hydraulic tailstocks. The role is hands-on and shop-floor based, involving regular interaction with machines, tooling, and measurement tools for setup and inspection. You will primarily focus on programming and setting up machines in this area, while also floating to assist with other equipment as needed. The environment emphasizes precision, safety, and collaboration among machinists, engineers, and quality personnel, with a production-oriented pace and routine use of standard manufacturing shop attire appropriate for working around CNC machinery.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elk Grove Village, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
