Responsibilities This position serves as a journeyman Power Plant Mechanic at a hydroelectric power project and is responsible for the inspection, cleaning, testing, installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment. Performs preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls on mechanical systems such as generators, turbines, pumps, compressors, fans, gear boxes, valves, and hoisting equipment. Installs new equipment, which includes dismantling old systems, assembling new components, and making major modifications. Operates mobile and gantry cranes for loading, unloading, and installing equipment. Performs all necessary rigging to handle materials and equipment. Operates various machine shop equipment such as lathes, shapers, drill presses, bench grinders, hydraulic presses, pipe threaders, and various air or electric portable tools such as drills, grinders, impact wrenches and brazing torches. Follows all safety rules and regulations, properly using safety equipment, and recognizing and guarding against hazards associated with the work environment. Performs work individually, or as a member of a crew, and is responsible for the quantity, quality, and timeliness of work in accordance with accepted trade practices and established procedures. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which includes Journeyman level training and knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical equipment within an electric power generating facility. Education Additional Information This announcement uses the POWER PLANT MECHANIC A direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
