Here's how a Cost & Controls Project Engineer for PCL Construction, Inc. within Civil West contributes to our team:
Responsibilities
Cost Management & Forecasting
Assist in the development, maintenance, and management of project budgets and cost reports
Track and analyze project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors
Support monthly cost forecasting and estimate-at-completion (EAC) processes
Identify cost trends, risks, and opportunities; provide recommendations to project leadership
Monitor committed vs. actual costs and ensure alignment with project budgets Project Controls & Reporting
Maintain accurate and timely cost reports, dashboards, and performance metrics
Support earned value management (EVM) and productivity tracking where applicable
Assist in developing and maintaining project schedules in coordination with scheduling teams
Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to cost, schedule, and productivity
Prepare and distribute regular project financial and progress reports Change Management
Support the change order process, including pricing, tracking, and documentation
Evaluate cost and schedule impacts of changes and potential risks
Ensure all changes are properly captured and reflected in project forecasts Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Accounting teams to ensure accurate reporting
Participate in project meetings to provide cost and schedule insights
Assist in subcontractor and vendor coordination related to cost tracking and billing
Support audits and internal reviews related to project financials Systems & Process Improvement
Utilize project management and cost control systems (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, SAP, Viewpoint)
Identify opportunities to improve cost control processes, reporting accuracy, and efficiency
Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and financial controls
Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture preferred, or equivalent experience.
4–6 years of construction experience in an operational role preferred.
Detailed knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings and specifications, project health, safety, and environment (HSE), quality, building materials, and required standards as per subject area.
Ability to apply basic engineering/problem-solving principles to construction challenges.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Proven flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Planning, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize own work, and direct-report tasks.
Able to create and lead schedules a comprehensive scale.
Ability to formulate subcontracts and administer subcontracts and contract documents.
Proven understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and internal operational systems with a strong skills for embracing new technology.
