We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable SH&E/Risk Manager – Canada (Strategic & Regulatory Lead) to support several of our Canadian operations. In this role, you will lead safety, health, environmental, and risk‑management efforts, ensure regulatory compliance across multiple provinces, and support operations in building a strong safety culture focused on prevention, training, and continuous improvement. This position plays a critical role in helping our teams operate safely, effectively, and in alignment with Canadian regulatory standards.
This role will be based in Edmonton, AB and has a travel requirement of around 60%.

Responsibilities / Job Duties:
Work closely with all operations managers and their safety teams in implementing all safety-related portions of Savage’s S7 System
Development and delivery of procedural and regulatory training
Lead Business operations in achieving the goal of zero incidents
Lead Safety, Health & Environmental (SH&E) efforts of the Refinery Services Business
Establish a proactive SH&E process towards incident prevention
Ensure all work is performed in compliance with applicable Canadian Federal and Provincial regulatory requirements
Ensure team members follow proper safety rules and processes
Implement and conduct training to ensure all Team Members are properly trained to perform their work safely
Ensure regulatory compliance; ensure all permits and reports are properly completed and submitted
Ensure compliance with:
Provincial Occupational Health & Safety Acts
Canada Labour Code (where applicable)
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations
Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA)
Applicable Provincial Environmental Protection Acts
Interface with key customer SH&E contacts and assist operations in implementing and executing customer-driven programs or emphasis areas (including involvement with each Refinery’s Contractor Safety Team activities)
Own the Safety Specialist Program for the Business
Ensure incidents are properly reported to internal and external parties including appropriate Provincial authorities
Assists in the start-up of new businesses, products, and processes
Lead Savage team on customer safety audits
Provide strategic coaching and mentoring for up to four (4) dot-line reports
Lead the root cause investigation process when events happen
Spend time visiting the operations and time in the field with the front-line team members
Track leading indicators to address trends within the unit
Gives and receives support to other operations when needed
Perform safety inspections and observations at operations
Responsible for growth, development, and continuing education and certification of SH&E supervisors (building bench strength)
Canadian Risk & Claims Oversight:
Oversee all Canadian risk claims, including:
Workers’ Compensation claims (all provinces)
Auto liability claims
General liability claims
Environmental claims
Ensure compliance with reporting requirements of Provincial Workers’ Compensation Boards including but not limited to:
WorkSafeBC
WCB Alberta
WCB Saskatchewan
WCB Manitoba
WSIB Ontario
CNESST Quebec
Atlantic Provincial WCB authorities
Coordinate with insurance carriers, third-party administrators, legal counsel, and Provincial regulators
Monitor claim reserves and cost trends
Ensure return-to-work and modified duty processes align with Provincial legislation
Provide regular claims reporting to the Group Safety Director
Escalate high-exposure claims or regulatory enforcement actions
Requirements/Qualifications:
Broad knowledge and understanding of safety, including Canadian Occupational Health & Safety legislation and Provincial regulatory frameworks, with some knowledge of environmental and rail best practices
Ability to analyze situations and data and make sound decisions
Training experience preferred
Computer skills (MS Office Suite)
Excellent communication skills, written and spoken; excellent organizational skills & multi-tasking

Preferred Education/Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related Canadian-recognized field
5+ years’ experience in a safety leadership role
Experience in petrochemical, refining, rail, or heavy industrial environments within Canada. Previous rail, DOT, and petrochemical experience
Experience working within multi-province regulatory environments preferred
Physical Requirements:
60% travel required within Canadian provinces
Ability to climb ladders, racks, and tanks
Ability to walk on uneven surfaces
Ability to work indoors in an office environment, as well as outdoors in changing weather conditions
Willing to always wear appropriate PPE when needed and set the example
Valid Canadian driver’s license required
Valid passport
