The Opportunity

We are seeking a Junior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technologist to join our Energy and Resources consulting team. This position is intended for new graduates or early‑career professionals who are interested in developing a strong foundation in consulting‑based instrumentation and control system design.

The successful candidate will work as part of an integrated, multidisciplinary design team, supporting projects across North America. Our portfolio includes power generation and distribution, oil & gas, mining, renewable energy, and energy transition projects. This role offers structured mentorship, progressive responsibility, and exposure to a wide range of industrial facilities and project types.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of experienced engineers and technologists, responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the preparation and coordination of technical specifications and engineering documentation

  • Supporting the evaluation, selection, specification, and design of instrumentation and control systems

  • Applying applicable codes, standards, and client‑specific requirements

  • Developing design deliverables using sketches, diagrams, redlines, and electronic models

  • Preparing instrument datasheets, material requisitions, and procurement support documentation

  • Participating in technical bid evaluations (TBEs) and vendor drawing and submittal reviews, including responses to RFIs

  • Assisting with the development of Construction Work Packages (CWPs) and providing construction‑phase support, as required

  • Coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and contractors

  • Participating in client meetings, design reviews, and value engineering sessions

  • Performing basic to intermediate instrumentation and control calculations using company and manufacturer tools

  • Supporting quality control and design verification activities

  • Managing multiple tasks while meeting project schedules and budgets

Technical Exposure and Deliverables

The successful candidate will gain experience supporting the preparation of:

  • Instrument datasheets and instrument index

  • Instrument selection and sizing calculations

  • Shutdown keys and control narratives, alarm settings and logic documentation

  • Control system architecture concepts and network layouts

  • I/O lists, wiring schematics, and loop documentation

  • P&ID development and interdisciplinary coordination

  • HAZOPs (Hazard and Operability Studies) and other process hazard analysis activities

  • Design and constructability reviews and field support activities

  • Vendor package and equipment documentation

  • Construction work packages and project communications

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Eligibility for registration with a professional or technical governing body (such as APEGA or ASET)

  • Strong interest in instrumentation and control systems for industrial and energy applications

  • Foundational knowledge of engineering principles

  • Ability to produce accurate, well‑organized work and perform self‑checks for quality and completeness

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and a demonstrated ability to learn software tools efficiently

  • AutoCAD familiarity or experience is considered an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent in Industrial Automation or Instrumentation & Controls

  • New graduates are encouraged to apply

  • Internship, co‑op, or summer experience in industrial, energy, or consulting environments is considered an asset

Pay Range:

• Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC & Various locations in Ontario-$50,100.00 - $67,600.00 Annually

• Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$53,100.00 - $71,700.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
