Description
The person in this position leads and directs employees under regional responsibility to ensure proper maintenance of equipment. He or she develops and facilitates safety, training, and mentoring of regional mechanical employees under the position’s jurisdiction; ensures compliance with all Canadian regulations and G&W safety rules for the mechanical department employees in order to meet department safety goals; represents G&W as a responsible corporate citizen to the public; protects the environment according to G&W policy and appropriate local laws; manages the maintenance and repairs of freight cars and locomotives in order to meet Canadian and company standards and to reduce life-cycle cost and increase reliability and availability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Director, Mechanical will provide strategic, operational, and financial leadership across all locomotive repair and mechanical service operations.
Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of Mechanics, Technicians, and Support Staff
Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Build and maintain professional networks across Western Canada’s rail sector
Oversee all Locomotive and Rolling Stock maintenance, inspection, and repair activities
Ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and mechanical standards
Conduct risk assessments and implement proactive safety controls
Develop strategies to maximize Locomotive performance, reliability, and service efficiency
Build maintenance schedules, lifecycle analyses, and asset performance programs
Evaluate and adopt industry innovations, technologies, and best practices
Full accountability for P&L performance, including cost management and operational efficiency
Lead Customer Relationships, ensuring high service levels, responsiveness, and long‑term partnership development
Oversee Invoice accuracy, approval, and timely submission
Manage Parts ordering, inventory, usage tracking, and cost control
Develop and manage budgets, resource allocations, and performance targets
Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, HR, Safety teams, regulators, and external partners
General Requirements:
Hands‑on mechanical leader with deep locomotive experience.
Minimum 5 years of experience in Locomotive Mechanical Operations
Associate degree or technical certification in a related field
Valid driver’s license
Must be a Qualified Locomotive Mechanic or Locomotive Electrician
Strong knowledge of Locomotive systems, Rolling Stock, and repair practices
Proven leadership ability with experience motivating and developing teams
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills
Demonstrated experience with budgeting, regulatory compliance, and project management
Experience with maintenance planning or asset management systems (preferred)
