Description

The Middle School Assistant Football Coach supports the Head Football Coach in providing a safe, positive, and developmentally appropriate football experience for middle school student-athletes. This position focuses on teaching fundamentals, reinforcing program expectations, and assisting with practices and games while aligning with the overall philosophy of the middle school and high school football programs. Reports directly to the Middle School Head Football Coach and works under the direction of the Director of Coaching and the EGR Parks & Recreation Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

The Middle School Assistant Football Coach shall:

  • Support the Head Football Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, games, and team activities.

  • Teach fundamental football skills, rules, and techniques appropriate for middle school athletes, as assigned by the Head Coach.

  • Reinforce proper tackling, blocking, and contact techniques consistent with current safety standards.

  • Assist with player supervision, skill development, drills, and position-specific instruction.

  • Follow all league rules, policies, safety guidelines, and program expectations.

  • Maintain appropriate sideline behavior, professional language, and sportsmanship during practices and games.

  • Support the Head Coach in implementing the approved playing time plan in accordance with league rules and program philosophy.

  • Ensure players use proper attire and required protective equipment during all football activities.

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with players, parents, officials, and opposing teams, directing parent questions to the Head Coach as appropriate.

  • Attend required pre-season and in-season meetings, trainings, and coaching education sessions.

  • Assist with practice setup, equipment management, and field organization.

  • Represent the football program in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Qualified candidates must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff and follow the direction of the Head Football Coach.

    Commit fully to the entire middle school football season, including practices, games, and meetings.

    Help run organized, efficient practices focused on fundamentals, safety, and player development.

  • Model positive behavior, leadership, and sportsmanship for student-athletes.

  • Manage conflict appropriately and maintain composure in competitive situations.

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of football rules, techniques, and team concepts.

  • Prior football playing and/or coaching experience is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.

  • The employee may occasionally lift or move football equipment of light to moderate weight.

    The employee will regularly work outdoors on football fields and athletic facilities and may engage in moderate physical activity, including setting up equipment and participating in drills.

  • Outdoor work occurs in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, and on uneven playing surfaces.

  • The position requires sufficient stamina, mobility, and coordination to actively assist with drills and ensure player safety.

  • Noise levels during practices and games may be moderate to loud.
