Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Controls Engineer designs, programs, and supports automated equipment and robotic systems in a highly automated manufacturing environment. This role develops and maintains control systems, ensures equipment operates to specification and industry standards, and drives continuous improvement through automation projects. The Controls Engineer also provides troubleshooting support, creates clear operation manuals, and collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient production.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed operation manuals that clearly describe the functionality, setup, and safe operation of new or modified equipment.

  • Review, examine, and interpret supplied specifications to ensure equipment functionality fully meets all stated requirements.

  • Commission and start up equipment to ensure it operates in accordance with approved specifications and applicable industry codes and best practices.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on machines and equipment as requested to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance.

  • Assist in checking and validating designs and technical details for proper functionality, including both personal work and the work of other engineers.

  • Maintain, update, and modify automation programs as required to support process changes, improvements, and equipment upgrades.

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and support of automation and continuous improvement projects within the facility.

  • Troubleshoot electrical and control issues using electrical schematics, automation programs, and test meters to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.

  • Plan projects by considering all facets of scope, time, and resources, and assemble clear plans to complete work efficiently and safely.

  • Meet project deadlines while maintaining a strong focus on safety and the integrity and reliability of equipment.

  • Collaborate and interact professionally with colleagues and stakeholders, maintaining positive working relationships even under difficult circumstances or high-pressure situations.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an engineering or technical environment.

  • Intermediate understanding of electrical circuits, conduit routing and wiring, and electrical panel design.

  • Intermediate knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic system design and their integration with automated equipment.

  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, including PLC programming and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with HMI systems, including configuration and modification of operator interfaces.

  • Exposure to robotics and robot programming within an automated manufacturing setting.

  • Familiarity with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and servo applications in motion control systems.

  • Knowledge of visual inspection systems and measurement sensors, including contact and non-contact devices.

  • Understanding of industrial device communication networks such as EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and RS-232.

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and project planning.

  • Ability to work to deadlines while maintaining safety standards and equipment reliability.

  • Ability to interact professionally and maintain positive working relationships in high-pressure situations.

  • Proven ability to plan work by considering scope, time, and resource requirements for successful project completion.

  • Experience with specific PLC platforms such as Omron or similar systems.

  • Background in controls engineering within a manufacturing or industrial environment.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills for both electrical and controls-related issues.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, climate-controlled, and highly automated manufacturing facility that produces automotive parts. The environment features advanced robotics, PLC-based control systems, and modern automation technologies. Work may occasionally require non-traditional hours to support manufacturing operations, equipment startups, or troubleshooting activities. The facility emphasizes safety, reliability, and continuous improvement, providing a professional setting where engineers collaborate closely with production and maintenance teams to keep sophisticated automated and robotic systems running efficiently.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
