Southern Company Payroll Supervisor in Durham, North Carolina

Job Summary:
Responsible for managing the payroll function and team, supporting corporate compliance processes, and establishing/enhancing efficient, automated, payroll processes.
Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills):
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution preferably in an Accounting related field
Five years of experience in accounting/ finance/payroll
Five years of experience in payroll/HR related functions
Five years of supervisory experience
General knowledge of GAAP, Finance and accounting theories
Proficient in MS Excel
ERP and business software experience
Broad experience within Payroll, including garnishments, multi-state taxing, withholding requirements
General experience with HR related transactions including benefits, bonus, and wage changes
Experience with certified payroll, desired
Understands payroll related general ledger accounts and associated reconciliations
Knowledge of key controls, practices and testing in relation to the internal control framework for payroll processes
Experience in developing process narratives and process flows
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to apply solutions and utilize resources
Exercises good judgement with the ability to balance compliance requirements, employee and business needs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to prioritize and organize work independently and in a team

Candidate should reside within a commutable distance to the office due to hybrid schedule. We do not offer relocation assistance.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages the Payroll team
Develop professional competencies of direct reports
Establish goals that guide the team to meet the overall organizational strategy
Knowledge and experience with employee related policies and legal requirements
Fosters an open and inclusive culture
Promotes and requires safe work practices
Ensures exemplary customer service with PowerSecure and Southern business units
Seeks opportunities for efficiencies and improved processes
Communicates and coordinates work-flows, information, etc with the Human Resources department
Participates and contributes to the AFT team and fosters teamwork
Manages costs/spending for the payroll department
Ensures an open environment with timely and positive customer service for company employees
Trains or ensures appropriate training for staff
Ensures appropriate knowledge resources are available for company employees regarding payroll processes
Coordinates with IT to ensure adequate systems, upgrades, and reports are available for payroll processes
Manages the payroll function, supervises and reviews the work performed and analyzes staffing requirements
Reviews payroll related journal entries and accruals
Analyzes business practices impacting payroll and works with stakeholders to develop, document and improve processes
Supports corporate compliance processes
Ensure appropriate internal controls and documentation around payroll processes
Ensures compliance with certified payroll requirements
Ensures accuracy of the company’s payroll expenditures
Responds to information requests from auditors and other parties related to payroll audits
Designs, evaluates and implements procedures and processes while assessing the need for systematic enhancements in order to increase efficiency
Working Conditions:
This position is hybrid
Occasional travel may be required for training or meetings.
Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate different time zones (Central/Eastern/Mountain/Pacific), if necessary.
Be flexible for after-hours tasks, as needed.
