The Cyber Security Engineer designs, implements, and maintains security controls across corporate, cloud, and network environments, with a primary focus on strengthening the organization’s overall cybersecurity posture. This role enhances secure architecture, access control, incident response support, vulnerability reduction, and systems hardening, while continuously improving security capabilities. Working closely with Compliance, DevOps, and IT teams, the Cyber Security Engineer secures infrastructure, improves threat visibility, and protects users, devices, applications, and systems across on-site and cloud environments, with a particular emphasis on advancing Secure Access Services Edge (SASE) and Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) architectures.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain security controls across endpoints, infrastructure, cloud, and network environments.
Strengthen the organization’s cybersecurity posture through secure architecture, access control, and systems hardening.
Support incident response activities, including security incident investigation, containment, and remediation.
Reduce vulnerabilities by applying cybersecurity best practices and hardening standards across systems and networks.
Collaborate closely with Compliance, DevOps, and IT teams to secure on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
Improve threat visibility by leveraging SIEM, EDR, and other security monitoring tools.
Protect users, devices, applications, and systems across corporate, cloud, and network environments.
Contribute to the design and advancement of SASE and ZTNA architectures.
Create and maintain detailed network and security diagrams to document designs and changes.
Configure network and security devices using command line interfaces (CLI) to implement secure configurations.
Investigate and resolve security incidents and network connectivity issues, ensuring timely and effective remediation.
Apply and manage network security mechanisms such as ACLs, VRFs, VLANs, and VPNs.
Support compliance initiatives by applying knowledge of relevant frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISO, SOC 2, and NERC-CIP.
Use network monitoring and troubleshooting tools to diagnose and resolve performance and security issues.
Leverage scripting and automation to streamline and enhance security operations and controls.
Participate in an on-call rotation for cybersecurity and infrastructure issues, including occasional off-hours support.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in cybersecurity, security engineering, or network security roles.
Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, threat mitigation, access control, and secure systems design.
Experience implementing and supporting security controls across endpoints, infrastructure, cloud, and network environments.
Familiarity with security incident investigation, response, and remediation processes.
Working knowledge of compliance frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISO, SOC 2, and NERC-CIP.
Experience with vulnerability management, systems hardening, and cybersecurity best practices.
Working knowledge of network design, segmentation, implementation, and troubleshooting.
Experience creating detailed network and security diagrams.
Proficiency in direct CLI configuration of network and security devices.
Familiarity with SASE and ZTNA concepts and architectures.
Ability to investigate and resolve both security incidents and network connectivity issues.
On-call availability for cybersecurity and infrastructure issues, including occasional off-hours support.
Fortinet product suite experience, including platforms such as FortiGate and FortiAP.
Experience with SASE platforms.
Knowledge of networking and security fundamentals in cloud environments such as Azure and AWS.
Proficiency with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark, ping, and traceroute.
Experience with VPN technologies, including IPsec site-to-site and SSL VPN.
Hands-on experience with Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) platforms and endpoint security tooling.
Experience working with Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms.
Understanding and practical use of Access Control Lists (ACLs), Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRFs), and VLANs.
Experience with Linux operating systems and command line interface (CLI).
Scripting and automation skills for security operations using tools such as Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
Knowledge of Identity and Access Management (IAM), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and Privileged Access Management (PAM) solutions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field preferred.
A background that combines both cybersecurity and networking disciplines.
Relevant networking certifications or equivalent hands-on networking experience preferred.
Work Environment
The Cyber Security Engineer works in a highly collaborative environment, partnering closely with Compliance, DevOps, and IT teams to secure both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure. The role involves regular use of enterprise-grade security and networking technologies, including Fortinet solutions, SASE platforms, EDR and SIEM tools, VPN technologies, and cloud services such as Azure and AWS. Daily work includes command line configuration on network and security devices, use of network monitoring and troubleshooting tools, and scripting for automation of security operations. The position may require participation in an on-call rotation, with occasional off-hours support to address urgent cybersecurity or infrastructure issues.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Durham, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $70.00/hr.
