The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) provides critical water and sewer services to the 309,000 plus residents of Durham. We have vacancies for Maintenance Assistants in within the Water & Sewer Maintenance Division of Water Management. Successful candidates must be able to operate or learn to operate the tools and equipment required for the position. For Stand-by/Recall duty, you can expect to cross train in the workgroups mentioned as well as the ones listed below:
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties. Overtime is required when needed or when responding to emergencies. This role participates in the scheduled rotation for Stand-by/Recall duty throughout the year. This job works during all types of weather.
Applicants can expect to cross-train in these workgroups:
Collection Systems: Assists with closed circuit television inspections, flush truck operations and sanitary sewer overflow response
Meter Services: Installs and repairs water meters; repair small leaks, replace meter boxes, and setters, test large meters, and pressure checks
Excavations: You will provide manual labor as part of a 6-person trenching/heavy equipment operation crew needed to repair and maintain the city’s underground water and wastewater systems
Distribution Systems: Repairs and maintain valves and fire hydrants for the City’s water systems.
Outfall Maintenance: Clears easements and assists with manhole repairs and inspections; also respond to sanitary sewer system overflows.
Duties/Responsibilities
Performing semi-skilled and manual labor for water, wastewater, construction, general maintenance, community development or facilities projects.
Transporting and carrying materials, mowing and trimming, cleaning equipment and making minor repairs.
Assisting in asphalt, concrete, storm sewer and ditch projects.
Assisting with traffic control device installations.
Assisting with excavations, pipeline installation and maintenance, valves and hydrant maintenance, outfall maintenance, leak detection, valve operations, utilities cuts and utilities shutdowns.
Assisting neighborhood improvement services with neglected property maintenance, painting, light carpentry, and general building maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
One year of maintenance field experience
Ability to regularly lift 65 lbs.
A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
OSHA Competent Person certification and OSHA Trenching/Shoring certification not required at time of hire but must be obtained within one year
Additional Preferred Skills
Experience within water & sewer maintenance at other municipalities
North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License
