The City of Durham, North Carolina is seeking an accomplished auditing professional to serve as its next Audit Services Director. This is an opportunity to lead a modern, forward-looking audit function that plays a critical role in strengthening governance, enhancing performance, and building public trust across a complex municipal organization.
Reporting to the City Manager and the Audit Services Oversight Committee, the Director will guide a high-impact program focused on risk-based auditing, internal controls, and organizational improvement. This role goes beyond traditional compliance and positions audit services as a strategic partner and trusted advisor to departments and leadership alike.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in government auditing, risk assessment, and performance auditing, along with the ability to translate complex findings into clear, actionable insights. A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to innovation, including the use of data analytics and emerging technologies will be essential to success.
The position offers a salary range of $145,602–$207,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package and professional development opportunities.
Duties/Responsibilities
Expertise in government auditing, risk assessment, and performance auditing.
Ability to translate complex findings into clear, actionable insights.
Collaborative leadership style and a commitment to innovation, including the use of data analytics and emerging technologies.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree.
10 years of progressively responsible related professional experience that includes significant management and supervisory experience.
Some assignments may require additional certifications and/or licenses.
