Project Controls Specialist $82,000 – $102,000 | Hybrid Work Available Three (3) Open Positions

GENERAL PURPOSE

Minnesota Power is hiring three (3) Project Controls Specialists to join our growing team. In this role, you will support the Enterprise Project Management Organization (EPMO) by overseeing the development, monitoring, and analysis of large capital project budgets, schedules, and risks. Working closely with the EPMO, Project Managers, the Project Cost and Controls Analyst, Project Scheduler, and Project Risk Analyst, you will monitor, interpret, and analyze cost, schedule, and risk data from multiple sources to ensure project scope, timelines, budgets, and objectives are achieved. You will help identify issues related to project progress, performance, and compliance with partnership agreements and company objectives, and assist in recommending and implementing the most effective path forward. Additionally, you will collaborate with the Document Management Team to ensure that project documentation—including RFIs, submittals, and drawings—is accurately routed and stored in accordance with EPMO procedures and company requirements.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support advanced analytical processes used to develop and monitor project budgets, schedules, and performance metrics.

  • Maintain accurate data across financial systems, schedules, and PMIS tools.

  • Support continuous improvements to systems, templates, and reporting processes.

  • Reconcile and verify data across multiple systems for consistency.

  • Analyze complex project data to generate actionable insights and prepare clear, comprehensive reports.

  • Conduct detailed budget and forecast evaluations, assess project change impacts, and monitor contract compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with project controls standards, workflows, and approval thresholds.

  • Support audits, cost recovery filings, and compliance reviews.

  • Maintain configuration control of cost, schedule, and scope baselines.

  • Evaluate schedule performance and dashboards to identify risks and inform decision making.

  • Review project documentation and collaborate with cross functional teams to improve accuracy and project outcomes.

  • Review change requests for scope, cost, and schedule impacts.

  • Track project risks, impacts, mitigation strategies, and exposure levels.

  • Align cost and schedule forecasts with updates from risk owners.

  • Support contingency drawdown tracking and reporting activities.

  • Provide narrative updates for Enterprise Steering Committee reporting, including KPIs and key risks.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource for project controls processes and expectations.

  • Work autonomously while providing guidance, direction, and peer leadership to others.

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to build and maintain effective working relationships.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business Administration, Analytics, Construction Management, Engineering, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Seven or more years of job related experience.

  • A related advanced degree (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Accounting, Master’s in Construction Management) may be considered as equivalent to up to one year of experience.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position may be considered for a hybrid work arrangement based on ALLETE’s needs. A hybrid work arrangement means the employee’s position will be a blend of work performed both in-person and at an offsite location such as an employee’s home office. The position will report to any of the following locations: Duluth, Cloquet, Cohasset, Eveleth, Little Falls, or Virginia, MN.

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel for meetings and project oversight.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Power BI or other data analytics tools.

  • Proficiency with Oracle, Maximo, PowerPlan, and Autodesk Construction Cloud.

  • This position may require skills, job match, and/or aptitude assessments.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

    The expected annual compensation range for this position is $82,000 - $102,000. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions.
