TITLE:Child Care Program Director (Anticipated)
REPORTS TO:Superintendent/Building Principal
Position Purpose:
The position of a Child Care Director in a school district is to oversee and manage early childhood and/or before-and-after school programs, ensuring high-quality care, education, and safety for children enrolled in these services. This role ensures that all child care services meet state licensing requirements, district policies, and high standards of quality and safety. The director provides leadership and supervision to child care staff, develops educational programming, manages budgets, and fosters positive relationships with families, staff, and the community to support the developmental needs of children and align services with the educational mission of the school district.
Essential Functions:
Completes necessary paperwork such as yearly license, annual state reports, and monthly district reports
Carries out state and local regulations in areas of health, safety, and licensing
Develops policies and procedures and a parent handbook, which includes information required in the Department of Human Services licensing standards
Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates child care staff
Keeps up-to-date records
Prepares and implements budget and financial reports
Purchases equipment and supplies, and arranges for the maintenance and repairs of equipment
Collects and deposits fees and tuition
Conducts staff orientation and meetings
Plans and implements staff development programs.
Develops and implements an advertising and public relations program as needed
Develops and coordinates the food program
Coordinates quarterly Child Care Advisory Board meetings
Keeps ongoing communications with elementary school staff, child care staff, and parents
Performs all other tasks as assigned by the Child Care Board or HHS.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Early Childhood Development Strong understanding of child growth and development principles from birth through school age
Curriculum & Program Development Knowledge of best practices in early learning, including curriculum planning, instructional methods, and educational standards (e.g., Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies GOLD).
State and Federal Regulations Familiarity with state licensing requirements, health and safety codes, and federal programs (e.g., Head Start, CACFP).
School District Operations Understanding of school district policies, procedures, and educational goals.
Budgeting and Financial Management Knowledge of budgeting, funding sources (e.g., grants), and cost control in an educational/child care setting.
Personnel Management Familiarity with HR practices, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and labor regulations
Certification/License:
Eligible for employment under standards prescribed by the Iowa Department of Human Services.
