Description

Under general supervision, supervises the collection of garbage or rubbish and the cleaning of streets and alleys.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervises the work of a moderately large group of subordinates employing trucks designed for a one-person and/or multiple person crew engaged in the collection of garbage or rubbish along designated routes in assigned section of the City or at a specified location.

  • Makes periodic inspections of work performed, reports on physical changes in routes to be covered, and requests additional help with necessary to maintain schedule.

  • Prepares time records on workers, trip records on trucks, and simple reports of yardage, tonnage, and work completed.

  • Checks and follows up on complaints and corrects deficient condition.

  • Locates minor malfunctions in equipment and makes repairs when appropriate.

  • Reports equipment in need of repair and schedules preventive maintenance.

  • Instructs employees in the performance of duties and in the care and operation of equipment.

  • Monitors employee attendance records and recommends discipline as needed.

  • Assists in the layout and determination of district pick ups, as assigned.

  • Closely watches, directs, and/or subsequently inspects the sweeping of streets, snow removal, and salting and sanding of icy streets.

  • Performs other duties concerned with collection and disposal of refuse such as locating dump grounds, seeing that dump grounds are kept in a usable condition, investigating complaints, and collecting tickets for removal of commercial rubbish.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduation or GED.

  • Two (2) years of experience in planning, and supervising the work of several groups of workers engaged in removing municipal waste and cleaning streets.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
