Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Academic Services Officer I – Outreach Coordinator

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Services Officer I – Outreach Coordinator at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

This is a 100% Grant funded position.

Academic Services Officer I – Outreach Coordinator reports to the Program Manager/Director of Veterans Upward Bound. This is a non-ESS position that supports the student success initiatives that enhance the retention mission of the TRIO VUB Grant. This grant is funded through August 2027.

The primary duties of the position are:

  • Coordinate the recruitment in support of TRIO VUB applicants to determine eligibility of the program.

  • Work closely with TRIO VUB team to develop and facilitate student success initiatives and programming that meets grant goals in partnership with campus partners to provide financial literacy support, career guidance, academic support, etc.

  • Outreach Coordinator establishes relationships with organizations and outreach opportunities to promote the Veterans Upward Bound Program.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA and FERPA privacy rules.

  • Maintain relationships with postsecondary and VoTech institutions where VUB participants may be referred to.

  • Document all relevant participant communications (i.e. in-person, phone, email, text messaging…).

  • Participate in VUB staff meetings and training events.

  • Demonstrate Knowledge of Veterans benefits (Education, Disability, Health Care).

  • Demonstrate Knowledge of State, Federal, and Veterans Service Organizations.

  • Serves as a representative of Veterans Upward Bound to internal and external constituencies.

  • Strengthens current relationships and develops new relationships with other veteran-serving organizations of the community to promote participation in the program.

  • Continuously develop knowledge of best practices and tools in the areas of TRIO Veterans Upward Bound.

  • Assist with data collection and reporting required for the TRIO VUB annual progress report.

  • Maintaining reports on TRIO VUB recruitment efforts and community partnerships.

  • Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as needed and requested.

  • Provide own transportation to work and work-related events.

  • Travel to and participate in in-person outreach events (i.e. Veterans Coffees, College Fairs, Career Fairs) and visit outside agencies/facilities to establish relationships/partnerships and promote the VUB program within VUB grant counties

  • Other duties as defined by the TRIO VUB Grant director.

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Education or related fields required; current participation in an academic program leading to a master’s degree preferred.

  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential documents.

  • Ability to assimilate extensive knowledge of academic programs, policies and requirements.

  • Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.

  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to propose and implement effective solutions to issues and/or problems.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Work independently with limited supervision, self-motivated, making decisions and solving problems with minimal guidance.

  • Must have reliable transportation

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Computer literacy required.
