The Minnesota Department of Transportation - District 4 is seeking a student worker/intern for the Planning Department. Students may work up to 16 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during summer.

Examples of work:

(A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.)

  • Provides planning support to the District in the preparation of statewide, district, local, modal, system, corridor, and project plans; special studies, technical reports, and projects.

  • Assist with the development of bicycle and pedestrian facilities to address safety, efficiency, and mobility of non-motorized travelers, integrating non-motorized transportation within District planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations processes.

  • Assist with bike/ped counting with data collection by setting up portable traffic counters and road tubes. Will maintain a log of bike/ped counts.

  • Geographic Information Systems support, such as creating custom maps and reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must currently be enrolled as a full-time student in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Political Science, Public Administration or another related field with a GPA of at least 2.0.

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a college, university, trade, or technical school in the next three (3) months.

  • Students must be enrolled in six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter credits; or for a non-credit granting institution, two (2) or more classes per semester/quarter.

  • Applicants will be asked to complete an Education Verification form prior to appointment.

  • Knowledge of community and/or transportation planning.

  • Knowledge of GIS.

Preferred Qualifications
