Principal Financial Group Software Engineer I in Des Moines, Iowa
What You'll Do
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our Individual Solutions team within Retirement and Income Solutions. Individual Solutions IT focuses on using the best technology to solve complex problems while also maintaining high standards and limiting technical debt. The team’s focus is to help customers with their financial wellness by offering tools and products to help them achieve their goals.
With guidance and mentorship, the engineer will contribute to software development efforts while building foundational skills in source control, development tools, build systems, and automated testing best practices. This role also provides opportunities to participate in code and design reviews and to learn core technical design concepts in a collaborative team environment. The team works with a wide range of technologies, including AWS Cloud, Java, and Web development.
What You'll Do
Focus on growing as an engineer by learning existing tools, resources and processes.
Develop the ability to write readable, maintainable, supportable code. Begin to learn security policies and standards. Take well-defined sub-tasks and completing these tasks.
Be introduced to the layers of a software development solution:
Run-time environment
Database
APIs
User interface and user experience
Quality assurance, automated testing
Security concerns throughout the program
Consider established controls, policies, regulations and recommend mitigation strategies during development. Understand customer and business needs. Develop knowledge of a single layer of the solution.
Participate in code/design reviews and learn technical design. Begin learning business and technical strategies.
Stay current and engaged on industry trends.
Assist in communicating technical concepts to business stakeholders as well as communicating business objectives to the technical team.
Perform other job-related duties or special projects as required.

Who You Are
Associate or bachelor's degree preferably in a computer science, technology, engineering or math-related field or equivalent experience
Proficiency with database applications, knowledge of mainframe, distributed and/or web programming language
Basic planning, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making and communication skills required
Must be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality
Must have the desire and ability to learn new technology and continuously grow
Ability to work on cross-functional teams and collaborate with both IT and non-IT partners
Must be able to provide on-call support on a rotational basis
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
Basic knowledge of insurance and financial services products
Ability to obtain certification(s) in an IT related field
Leadership experience
Excellent time management skills
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$58900 - $79800 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Location & Work Environment
This role will be located at our corporate headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa and offers a hybrid work arrangement (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek).
