Taxpayer Service Division
The Taxation Division (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE30JDBTSJo) promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance and customer service. A Tax Examiner reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensures the tax return can be processed as filed, resolves errors and contacts taxpayers to obtain any missing information. Furthermore, Tax Examiners can be responsible for analyzing accounting files, issuing refunds or bills, calculating penalty and interest, collecting delinquent taxes, handling taxpayer complaints, adjusting for discrepancies and working with other taxing authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service, local municipalities or agencies in another state.
What We Do
The Service Centers serve as the “face” of the Taxation Division and our team of dedicated professionals work collaboratively within the Customer Contact Group to promote voluntary compliance with tax laws through education, assistance and customer service. These Centers are located in Denver Metro, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Fort Collins, and Grand Junction in order to provide taxpayers with face to face accessibility to help with filing, payments, information, and other resources. Our Service Center location is seeking a courteous and friendly team player with experience working in a diverse, customer focused environment to serve as a Tax Examiner I. Our best Tax Examiners are adaptable and have strong computer software applications proficiency. Most of all, they possess a willingness and desire to learn and grow in an evolving atmosphere!
The Typical Day of aTemporary Tax Examiner I
You will be offering friendly, courteous, and complete customer service by ascertaining tax needs of all walk-ins into the Service Center. You will also be responding to questions from taxpayers via email and mailed forms . You'll be joining a close-knit team who promotes team building and supporting each other. As a Service Center team member you will:
Direct all customers to the correct areas by identifying customers' problems and needs. Answer ambiguous questions related to all tax types when a customer is unclear or uncertain about tax forms, Statutes and Regulations, DOR policies, delinquencies and assessments.
Promote voluntary compliance with tax laws through researching customer problems, identify solutions and needs, and take corrective actions in accordance with policies, Statutes, and Regulations.
Assist with sales tax, wage withholding and income tax returns.
Coordinate protest solutions with other DOR areas and other agencies through the supervisor.
Analyze and adjust returns, accounts and customer information using DOR systems.
This position will be located in our office and you will be required to work in person.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
AND
Two (2) years of experience in customer service environment.
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field as determined by the Department may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience..
Preferred Qualifications:
The following preferred experience(s), competencies and abilities are highly desirable for this position and will be considered in selecting the successful candidate:
State experience with GenTax
Demonstrated ability to communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
Ability to multi task in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail and thorough in completing work tasks
Proficient with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
Strong problem solving skills
Conditions of Employment with the CDOR :
Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.
As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations .
Pursuant to the Universal Driving Standards Policy (https://osc.colorado.gov/sites/osc/files/documents/Universal%20Policy%20Driving%20Standards.pdf) , any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.
To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:
Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle

Terms of Employment:
Temporary Aides are limited per Colorado constitution, a temporary employee may work for the State no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is not defined as a calendar or fiscal year, but a rolling 12-month period that begins with the month of the first day of work for the temporary assignment.
For continuous or regular (including part-time) work schedules, the temporary assignment starts the actual date the temporary employee begins work and ends after nine months. For example, a temporary employee who begins working June 15th may work continuously through March 14th. Upon completion of the continuous nine (9) month assignment the temporary aide must take four (4) months off prior to returning in the same position.
Temporary employees pay state, federal and local (if applicable) taxes, Medicare tax, and contribute to the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA). They also receive Workers’ Compensation coverage.
Non-permanent temporary employees are ineligible for all State of Colorado Benefits except for CSEAP benefits and Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association PERA retirement employer contributions.
Temporary employees are called to work on an as-needed basis; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours.
