Job Summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to join our team as the Managing Director, Water in our Akron, Ohio, office. This senior-level position is for an individual with extensive experience in the municipal and industrial water and wastewater markets.

The successful candidate will be a key leader in our Global Water Practice, responsible for driving growth and strategy in Ohio and throughout the US. This role requires a strategic thinker with a proven track record of business development, client relationship management and program implementation. This position will report to the General Manager of the Global Water Practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Development and Relationship Management: Maintain and expand existing relationships with clients and customers throughout the water and wastewater market. Develop national account plan for new and emerging services. Assist in the development of a national conference planning strategy.

  • Strategic Execution: Support the execution of the established water practice strategy and drive its implementation and success with clients and accounts, focusing on these primary pillars:

  • Progressive Design-Build: Champion the pursuit and execution of progressive design-build projects for water and wastewater facilities in the Ohio market.

  • Industrial Water Opportunities: Collaborate with other Burns & McDonnell global practices to identify and deliver key industrial water projects.

  • Digital Water: Support and participate in the development of digital water capability.

  • Program Management: Support the development and pursuit of Program Management opportunities.

  • Business Advisory: Collaborate with the 1898 team to advance the Business Advisory services in the Water Sector. Develop communities of practice to promote knowledge sharing across regions.

  • Consulting Practice Growth: Build and lead a successful water and wastewater consulting practice in Ohio, establishing Burns & McDonnell as a top-tier service provider in the state.

  • Asset Management Program Development: Develop and implement a comprehensive asset management program designed to generate recurring revenue and long-term value for the business.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and execute a strategic business plan.

  • Identify, develop, and direct the implementation of business strategies, including operational procedures, marketing strategies, pricing strategies, and business development/client retention strategies.

  • Manage the development and execution of the department business plan to achieve financial performance targets such as sales, revenue, and profitability.

  • Partner with leadership to ensure opportunities are appropriately pursued and supported.

  • Provide leadership to the team; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to ensure efficient, cost‑effective use of staff.

  • Drive profitable growth; manage staff levels, loading, and assignments to meet client requirements while supporting profitability goals.

  • Implement and support company, global practice, and/or regional office programs and initiatives; navigate and manage organizational change within the group.

  • Provide expert-level technical and consulting guidance.

  • Develop and manage department budgets and expenditures.

  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports to global practice or regional management.

  • Lead and/or collaborate with business development managers, business line leads, project managers, and proposal staff on proposals to secure work.

  • Ensure quality standards are met and exceptional deliverables are provided to clients.

  • Oversee recruitment, development, training, and retention of staff.

  • Conduct performance evaluations for staff members.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction for staff.

  • Interpret and communicate organizational policies, purposes, and goals to staff.

  • Ensure overall QA/QC process adherence.

  • Enforce compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Comply with all company policies and standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or a related field from an accredited program, along with 13 years of related professional consulting experience in complex industries, is required.

  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferred.

  • The role requires excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to employees, management, and clients at all levels.

  • The position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Candidates must have a proven ability to develop business strategy and build strong relationships with both clients and staff.

  • Strong project and process management skills, paired with a strategic perspective, are essential.

  • Expert proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.Preferred Qualifications

  • 20 years of experience in the municipal and/or industrial water and wastewater markets.

  • A professional engineer (P.E.) license is preferred.

  • Proven experience in business development and market growth.

  • Strong client and customer relationship management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives.

  • Excellent leadership, communication and people skills.

Compensation

$350,000.00-550,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
