Job Title: Overhead Crane Operator

Job Description

This role is responsible for safely handling and moving steel materials using overhead cranes in a fast‑paced industrial environment. You will support production by operating cranes and related equipment, assisting with industrial painting and finishing, and maintaining a clean and safe work area. The position is physically demanding and primarily involves working afternoon and night shifts, with occasional day shifts.

Work Environment

The role is based in a steel distribution and manufacturing facility within a heavy industrial setting. You will work primarily afternoon (3:30 PM – 11:30 PM) and night shifts (11:30 PM – 7:00 AM, 7 hours paid for 8 hours), with occasional day shifts (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM). The environment involves working around overhead cranes, industrial machines for cleaning and coating steel, forklifts, and various hand and power tools, including grinders. The work is physically demanding and requires standing, walking, and handling steel materials throughout the shift. All personal protective equipment is provided, except for steel toe boots, which you must supply and wear as part of the dress code in this safety‑focused industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate overhead cranes to move steel products throughout the shop.

  • Load, unload, and accurately position steel materials according to production requirements.

  • Assist with spray painting and finishing operations on steel products.

  • Operate industrial machines to clean and coat steel products as part of the production process.

  • Use hand tools and power tools, including grinders, to support material preparation and finishing.

  • Work closely with production teams to support workflow efficiency and meet production targets.

  • Perform daily equipment inspections on overhead cranes and related machinery, and promptly report any concerns or defects.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard‑free work area in accordance with safety standards.

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment.

  • Work independently and as part of a team to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Follow instructions from supervisors and team leads to support changing production priorities.

  • Support general labor duties in a heavy industrial steel environment as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to safely operate overhead cranes in an industrial or heavy industry environment.

  • Experience working in a physically demanding role, including lifting, standing, and moving throughout the shift.

  • Ability to work swing shifts, primarily afternoons and nights, with occasional day shifts.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and listening, to follow instructions and coordinate with the production team.

  • Demonstrated ability to work safely in an industrial environment and strong commitment to workplace safety.

  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools, including grinders, safely and effectively.

  • Capability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Reliable, hardworking attitude with a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.

  • Comfort working in a steel distribution and manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Overhead crane experience and/or formal overhead crane certification.

  • Sit‑down counterbalance forklift experience and/or forklift certification.

  • Industrial painting experience, including spray painting and coating steel products.

  • Previous experience working in an industrial steel shop or similar heavy industry environment.

  • Familiarity with general labor tasks in manufacturing or distribution settings.

  • Experience with rigging and banding steel products for safe movement and transport.
