City of Delphos Wastewater Operator in Delphos, Ohio

Work in this class involves semi-skills in the operation and maintenance of equipment involved in the treatment of wastewater. The position involves responsibility for participating with skilled plant operator who is responsible for the operation of the plant and lift stations. Upon appointment, an employee will perform most of his tasks under immediate supervision; however, with experience, will become familiar enough with operating procedures to work relatively independent of constant supervision except in case of an emergency and non-routine occurrences. The employee will be required to attend operator training schools as directed by the City to qualify for Ohio Operator certification.

 

Typical Tasks: In addition to the following, performs other related duties as required to assist the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent in all duties required by that position.

  • Attends training courses and engages in independent study of wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Operates and checks equipment, instruments, pumps, valves, etc.
  • Takes reading of pressures, volumes, weights, levels, and other data as required and records appropriately. Learns to make a variety of tests on raw, primary, and final sewage and other conditions at the plant.
  • Pumps sludge at prescribed levels; checks digester level and draws off supernatant when needed and hauls digested sludge,
  • Makes operational checks on equipment at the treatment plant, pumps houses and lift stations; checks, adjusts, repairs or replaces float controls, starter switches, pump and motors.
  • Keeps all equipment clean, lubricated, and painted.
  • Removes grease deposits, debris and sand from wet wells.
  • Maintains neat and clean work areas inside or outside of the buildings.
  • Keeps required records of all phases of operation and maintenance.
  • Collects samples of stream and plant flows as required and may assist in analysis as necessary.
  • Drains and cleans degritters, clarifiers and pumps; changes chlorine cylinders ad needed and checks supply.
  • Takes samples of sewage flow and assists in the analysis of suspended, settleable and total solids.
  • Does corrective and preventative maintenance throughout the plant and lift stations.

     

Normal Employment Standards:

 

  • Any combination of training and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Ohio Driver's License.
  • Some knowledge of the functions and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Willingness and ability to learn the processes involved in the treatment of wastewater including analyses, ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain daily records.
  • Must possess a valid Class I Ohio Wastewater Operators Certificate and have the ability to obtain an additional licenses that the Ohio EPA would require in the future.

     

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

 

Knowledge of the basic mechanical and operating principles involved in the operation and maintenance of a variety of less complex mechanical equipment.

Knowledge of the proper methods of lubricating and maintaining mechanical equipment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with working with mechanical equipment and of necessary safety precautions.

Knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in mechanical maintenance and repair work.

Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation, to detect flaws and to effect appropriate remedial measures.

Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.
